Position: Water Resources Designer 1

Job Overview

Are you passionate about water resources engineering and ready to take on meaningful challenges that shape communities and natural systems? DOWL is seeking a motivated and highly skilled Water Resources Engineer to join our Surface Water Group in Montana (Billings, Bozeman, & Helena Offices). This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse and impactful projects involving drainage design, river engineering, stormwater, floodplains, dams and irrigation infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with basic planning, analysis, and design for a variety of water resource projects including irrigation canals, dams, storm drainage systems, stream restoration and fish passage, bridges and culverts.
  • Perform basic field investigations and inspections.
  • Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, watershed modeling, and alternatives analysis.
  • Create design calculations, technical reports and memos, exhibits and figures.
  • Produce construction quantity calculations and cost estimates.
  • Develop design documents and construction plans.
  • Create presentation content and slides.
  • Inspect construction of designed components.
Technical and Software Skills
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) – Basic Knowledge.
  • Water sector software (GIS, CAD, and related tools). – Basic Knowledge.
  • Experience with HY-8, HEC‑RAS 1D and 2D, HEC‑HMS, SRH2D, rainfall simulation models.
Technical Expertise
  • Basic understanding of technical fundamentals.
  • Perform basic technical tasks with oversight.
  • Conduct self‑review of deliverables.
  • Motivated to learn new technical skills through self‑study and mentoring.
Teamwork

Functions in a supporting role on a project team. Collaborates, listens, takes direction well, and retains information. Motivated to grow skills and help the team.

Client Interaction

Infrequent direct client interaction. Reads emails, attends client meetings occasionally, and prepares meeting minutes.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • No experience required (entry level).
Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Academic emphasis in hydrology and/or hydraulics.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • EIT/EI required within six months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Physical Demands

The position requires sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, using hands, and occasionally navigating uneven terrain. Lifting or moving up to 25 pounds is required. Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level is usually moderate.
