The Montana Board of Crime Control’s (MBCC) mission is to proactively contribute to public safety, crime prevention and victim assistance through planning, policy development and coordination of the justice system in partnership with citizens, government and communities in Montana. In support of this mission, MBCC is comprised of twenty‑one dedicated employees possessing a shared vision of public service for Montana’s most vulnerable citizens.

To support and inform the work of the MBCC, Montana’s Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) is housed within the Board. The SAC collects, analyzes, and reports statistics on crime and justice to all levels of government, and manages grants to improve criminal justice data quality and to support criminal justice research.

What is this career opportunity?

The Data Warehouse Architect, housed in the SAC, serves as the lead designer for the Criminal Justice Data Warehouse (JDW) project authorized through the 2023 Montana Legislative Session. The JDW contributes to the comprehensive and cohesive criminal justice system to aid efforts in resource allocation, policy changes, and aims to enhance outcomes for both offenders and crime victims. The Data Warehouse Architect will be responsible for duties such as:
  • Architecting and structuring data in a scalable manner providing a means to model data;
  • Performing a variety of data analyses, data profiling and data validation functions;
  • Defining data standards and appropriate models for data warehouse needs;
  • Developing processes to support data flows from their source into data warehouse models; and
  • Supporting integration of data from various sources.

  • This position is eligible for part‑time telework opportunity following a period of training. Weekly in‑office days are required.
What are we looking for?
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an Information Technology related field with coursework emphasizing database concepts, security principles and IT architecture;
  • Substantive professional and progressive experience operating in complex database environments.
  • Alternate forms of education/experience considered on a case‑by‑case basis
Preference will be given to candidates with specific experience:
  • Working with criminal justice data;
  • Operating in Tableau or other dashboarding tools;
  • Administering or working within an AWS environment; and/or
  • Leading the design of a complex database environment.
Knowledge of or ability to learn:
  • Data warehouse architecture and relational database structures
  • Scaled Agile development methodologies
  • Database platforms including Oracle, SQL Server and Snowflake
  • Information models such as XML, SOAP, and NIEM
  • Modeling tools and ETL products
Ability to:
  • Utilize Business Intelligence tools
  • Program in common languages such as SQL, PL/SQL, etc.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional relationships
  • Design, install, configure and support multi‑terabyte data warehouses
  • Prioritize a complex workload and meet project deadlines
  • Conduct technical requirements analyses, data processing flowcharting and data mapping
