The Assistant Store Manager contributes to the overall financial performance of the store, including product merchandising/stocking, expense control, and achievement of sales and profitability goals. The assistant manages front‑end operations to ensure accurate recording of purchases and that front‑end staff are well trained in shrink control and customer service. The role works closely with the Store Manager to execute the Annual Operating Plan and associated programs to deliver desired sales and profit results.

Responsibilities include recruiting, training, and developing front‑end employees and other staff as assigned, ensuring store adherence to loss prevention procedures and performing Manager‑on‑Duty functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coach employees in providing efficient and friendly service at the registers and throughout the store.
  • Address personnel and performance issues, including coaching and issuing verbal and written warnings.
  • Consult with the Store Manager and HR on next steps leading to progressive discipline and termination, when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with personnel policies and procedures.
  • Understand the mechanics of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and how operations translate into the monthly Profit and Loss (P&L).
  • Assist in the AOP budgeting process; responsible for achieving budgeted sales and profits and managing shrinkage with a heavy emphasis on front‑end process.
  • Participate in the annual inventory process, including preparation and execution of inventory guidelines.
  • Train front‑end employees and other staff on required programs.
  • Ensure all staff comply with company policies, procedures, and store SOPs; maintain a safe and well‑maintained facility for staff and customers.
  • Interview, hire, orient, and train assigned employee groups.
  • Provide floor employees with day‑to‑day direction, including schedules, outlining store goals and sales and shrinkage targets, and monitoring results while performing Manager‑on‑Duty functions.
  • Plan in‑store demonstrations, including preparation and set‑up of demo carts/displays, distribution of product samples, and use of strong suggestive selling techniques.
  • Assist in overseeing product receipt, return of damaged or expired product, and timely restocking of shelves.
  • Maintain merchandising programs within the store, such as promotional ends, signage, and other company or market‑specific programs.
  • Communicate with store employees about all merchandising and marketing programs, assisting in execution and follow‑up reporting.
General Operating Procedures
  • Analyze monthly store reports to evaluate controllable expenses and overall store performance.
  • Address any variance to company standards with appropriate action plan, partnering with the Store Manager as needed.
  • Ensure proper scheduling of employees to meet business objectives.
  • Ensure all employees understand and can execute emergency operating procedures.
  • Accept special assignments as directed by the Store Manager.
  • Adhere to, communicate, and fully support all policies, processes, and procedures of the company.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.
Supervision
  • Sales Associates, Sales Department Lead(s)
Relationships
  • Internal:
    Interact with employees at all levels of responsibility throughout the company.
  • External:
    Interact with all customers and service providers.
Work Environment

Work is performed in a retail store setting, open to the public, with exposure to outside weather conditions, including inclement weather. Noise levels are usually moderate. Work is typically performed on a level surface, though a ladder or elevated surface may be required as needed. Temperature varies from
-10 to 85 degrees. Physical interaction with customers is required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a retail work environment.
  • At least two (2) years of management/supervisory experience.
