About the RoleThe Montana Historical Society (MTHS) exists to provide the people of Montana and those interested in the history of the American west a place to learn about, enjoy and celebrate the past. MTHS has an opening for a Security Guard/Facilities Assistant. This position has the responsibilities of protecting the collections, staff and public throughout the building, grounds, all galleries, research centre, and staff offices.
Since personal contact with the public plays a significant role in this position, communications skills are essential. This position will assist with event space set up/teardown for events and clean up after events. This position occasionally requires a flexed work schedule to accommodate special events. The successful applicant will be subject to a criminal history background check.
- Lock doors, windows, and gates of entrances and exits to secure building.
- Patrol premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion.
- Monitor and authorise entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to provide safety and guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
- Answer alarms, investigate, resolve, and document disturbances.
- Respond to medical emergencies by administering basic first aid.
- Write reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences.
- Answer telephone calls, questions, and provide information while performing security work.
- Patrol and circulate among visitors, patrons, or employees to preserve order and protect property, warn persons of rule infractions or violations, and apprehend or evict violators from the premises.
- Coordinate security operations to ensure adequate staffing levels and security coverage are maintained.
- Respond to and help manage emergencies by implementing established safety and preparedness procedures, coordinate with responders, and initiate protocols to secure or restrict areas.
- Assist with training and drills on security procedures, equipment, and policy updates; providing feedback and guidance to promote effective staff readiness.
- Review security logs, reports, and incident documentation for completeness and accuracy, identifying trends or issues requiring follow up.
- Participate in evaluating and recommending improvements to security systems, protocols, and technology to enhance facility protection.
- Enforce rules such as restrictions on touching displays or photography.
- Setup/Teardown for events, including stages, tables and chairs.
- Cleaning up after events, including removing furniture, equipment and trash.
- Seasonal needs - setting up and taking down outdoor decorations, umbrellas, etc.
- Replenishing water containers throughout the MTHS kitchenettes.
- Limited shoveling of snow off walks and steps in coordination with GSD.
- Assisting fellow staff with office set up (i.e. moving desks and file cabinets).
- Addressing key assignment needs & maintenance of locks.
- Assisting with the movement of deliveries and other materials throughout the MTHS.
- Limited assembly of furniture.
- Assisting GSD with pest control.
- Limited hazard abatement to address immediate safety concerns.
- General Maintenance and Grounds Care

- High-school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of experience in a security-related field, including experience performing patrols, access control, and incident response, or
- One year as a Security Guard 1
- Other combinations of education and experience may be substituted
- CPR/First Aid/AED
- Climbing
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Walking
- Patrolled terrain may be uneven
- Work patrolling buildings or grounds may occur in all types of weather
- Work may occur during irregular hours or at night
- Regular contact with other employees and the public may be required
- Must remain alert and responsive throughout their shift
- Able to stand for long periods of time
The Security Guard/Facilities Assistant will work a standard 40-hour schedule, which will include Saturday, Sunday and may include holidays.
Hours of OperationThe Montana Heritage Center operates seven days a week and is open all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas. As an employee of the Montana Historical Society your work hours may fall outside the regular Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
