As a Field Service Technician you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers and are expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products. Services include Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks. You will provide extraordinary customer service, identify customer needs, and provide them with communications solutions.

Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the selected individual must reside within a 60‑minute distance from the Helena, Montana warehouse located at 920 E Lyndale Ave - Helena, MT 59601.

This position is eligible for a $2,000 sign‑on bonus.

Responsibilities
  • Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment, network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products and services for new and existing customers.
  • Identify defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable.
  • Locate cable and fiber for customer requests and construction needs; climb poles and operate construction equipment as required.
  • Mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage and keep an orderly log of all locate requests.
  • Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections; respond to dispatches.
  • Support record systems for cross‑connects, line groups, and network elements.
  • Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services.
  • Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices for splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Follow TDS attendance guidelines and meet business needs.
Other Qualifications
  • Successfully complete customer‑specific background check requirements.
  • Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities; ability to work occasional overtime and travel.
  • Successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
  • Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW of >10,000 lbs.
  • A+ certification and computer networking experience.
  • Knowledge of telecommunication products and services, including inside wiring, Internet/Intranet, bonding & grounding, data & computer transmission, fiber optics, structured wiring, Video/CATV/DBS installation, inventory systems, cable locating, battery maintenance, PBX, Centrex, switch maintenance, voicemail, special circuits, fiber terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN, and testing.
  • Experience with computer applications: databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel.
  • Work independently with little or no supervision and make decisions accordingly.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills; effective verbal and written communication.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
  • Operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role requires regular sitting, standing, writing, and operating a computer keyboard. Frequent movement, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing may be required. Lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally is expected. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. The position may involve working outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms, and extreme weather conditions.

Exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment is possible.
