Position: Journeyperson Electrician - 309A Construction & Maintenance

Our Substation group is currently looking to add Journeyperson Electricians – 309A Construction & Maintenance to our growing team.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, the 309A Construction & Maintenance Journeyperson Electrician performs electrical construction activities individually or as part of small, dedicated work groups. In this role, the Journeyperson carries out a range of electrical installation, termination, and testing activities on site, ensuring project construction is executed effectively and safely.

The Journeyperson is also responsible for identifying potential changes or field issues as they arise and bringing them to the Foreman’s attention. You will work closely with the Foreman to establish timelines for work activities and to confirm when work fronts have been completed.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Comply with and follow Valard’s Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Inform the supervision team of the equipment and materials required for the work fronts.
  • Work with new-hire employees to ensure they understand and adhere to Valard’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the dedicated work group complies with Valard’s project procedures, safety program requirements, and construction quality practices.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere within the group.
  • Address any crew issues or conflicts with the Site Foreman as they arise.
  • Work with the on-site Safety Advisor to address any safety concerns brought forward by crews or the Client.
  • Manage material deliveries and inventory as per the assigned work fronts, identifying any potential risks and bringing them to the Site Supervisor’s and Foreman’s attention.
  • Ensure the crew supports the Valard Quality Management team’s requirements as instructed by the Foreman and Site Supervisor.
  • Ensure Valard’s equipment and tools are used in a safe and professional manner and accounted for daily; tag any defective tools and equipment out of service and bring them to the Foreman’s attention.
  • Work with the Site Supervisor and Foreman to understand the full scope of the project, allowing you to identify changes in scope and address them with the Foreman immediately.
  • Effectively manage small work groups.
  • Maintain a daily diary for record-keeping purposes.
Technical Scope
  • Terminate and test LV, MV, and HV power cables, control cabling, and CT/PT instrument wiring to project drawings and specifications.
  • Install, wire, and assist in commissioning control, protection, and metering panels, junction boxes, and marshalling kiosks.
  • Install grounding grids, ground risers, and equipment bonding to specification.
  • Install cable tray and conduit, and perform cable/wire pulling in accordance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC/CEC).
  • Perform steel erection, cable tray building, cable trench, bus, HV equipment, and steel structure installation proficiently.
  • Pull glands and terminate cable proficiently.
  • Interpret single-line diagrams, schematic/wiring drawings, and connection schedules for electrical systems.
  • Identify quality deficiencies and complete documentation correctly.
  • Perform daily tailboards, identify hazards, and apply preventative and mitigative controls.
  • Contribute to the review of Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • 4 years of experience in the construction industry
  • Certified 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician with a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification, in good standing with Skilled Trades Ontario (required).
  • Journeyman / Journeyperson Electrician certification
  • Experience performing 309A electrical work on medium- to high-voltage electrical construction projects.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (required).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small work groups safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of various construction disciplines, safety regulations, and quality control.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, single-line diagrams, and schematic/wiring drawings.
  • Understanding of SCADA, RTU, and control/protection systems.
  • Comprehension of pertinent basic EB & G principles.
  • Ability to explain GOI, identify limits of approach, and comprehend lock-out/tag-out procedures.
