The Mechanical Engineer Position is responsible for the overall site ownership for best maintenance practices, helping manage the maintenance budget, assisting with capital and maintenance projects, and supporting corporate initiatives. In addition, the engineer will coordinate the mill maintenance business strategy/plan, oversee preventive maintenance, and ensure planned maintenance completion.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Reports to the Mill Maintenance Superintendent/Manager any information that may impede the operation of the plant as soon as it becomes known.
  • Initiate and/or maintain a cost‑effective preventive maintenance program.
  • Oversee and plan contract work and installations performed by outside vendors.
  • Assist in the selection, evaluation, and installation of capital and expense projects.
  • Assist production areas with troubleshooting and other assistance as needed.
  • Implement, maintain, and support all company policies and procedures, the safety program, and good housekeeping.
  • Improve and lead the maintenance organization, designing and implementing long‑term continuous improvement applications and systems to enhance equipment longevity.
  • Actively participate in planning and executing plant outages.
  • Maintain records related to mechanical integrity.
  • Provide on‑call and weekend duty coverage within a designated rotation.
  • Additional duties may be assigned by management.
  • Manage subcontractor relationships, including planning, assigning, directing work, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with organization policies and applicable laws.
  • Be hands‑on when necessary.
Education And/or Experience
  • At least 10 years of experience working in a paper mill environment, with a minimum of 5 years in maintenance management.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical background.
  • B.S. degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Pulp/Paper) preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill, leadership, and successful application of preventive and predictive maintenance, long‑range planning and budgeting, and excellent communication skills.
  • In‑depth knowledge of maintenance of a paper manufacturing plant is an asset.
  • Experience with repair and maintenance of processing equipment.
Computer Skills
  • Expertise with basic office software.
  • Ability to work effectively with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and instruct others on its operation.
Language Skills
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, P&’s, and procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.
Mathematical Skills
  • Read a tape measure with speed and accuracy.
  • Calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurements, volume, and rate.
  • Apply high‑school math concepts.
Reasoning Ability
  • Apply common sense to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or graphic form.
  • Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Lead root‑cause analysis and problem‑solving teams.
  • Have analytical and field troubleshooting skills.
Technical Skills
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical machinery, including conveyor systems, breakers, boilers, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and ability to learn new complex applications.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • May be required to maintain a current Lift Truck Operator License and/or other appropriate certification for work in certain areas or on certain equipment.
Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear. Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally required to sit.

Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and an overall loud noise level.
