POLICE OFFICER

Purpose of Classification

Protect life and property, respond to the needs of the general public, deter criminal activity, enforce all city statutes, ordinances and state laws, and perform investigations and special assignments within an assigned division.

Essential Functions
  • Enforce all city and state codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations, both traffic and criminal, to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Maintain high visibility by patrolling assigned area, city streets, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses to ensure security; observe potential poachers, thieves, suspicious persons, and violators.
  • Perform surveillance of problem locations and criminal suspects; collect and review data; develop trends and patterns; file intelligence reports.
  • Investigate reported crimes; interview and obtain statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; process crime scenes; gather, prepare, and submit evidence to the crime lab.
  • Obtain warrants; conduct search operations; locate missing persons.
  • Determine probable cause to search and/or reasonable suspicion to detain suspects; pursue fleeing suspects, subdue resisting suspects; effect arrests; process and transport prisoners.
  • Operate dispatch communications; respond to emergency calls and assistance requests; mediate disputes and advise on rights.
  • Assist or back fellow officers on domestic and theft calls, executing warrants, serving subpoenas, and making traffic stops.
  • Respond to accident calls; gather information at the scene; investigate and reconstruct serious injury or fatal accidents; interview victims and witnesses; investigate hit-and-run accidents; notify next-of-kin as needed.
  • Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters including directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, and managing dangerous situations; interact with EMS teams.
  • Conduct road blocks; administer roadside field sobriety tests; identify wanted persons/vehicles; impound vehicles; assist stranded motorists; ensure roadways are clear of obstacles and hazards.
  • Stop vehicles for traffic violations; issue traffic citations and warnings.
  • Contact command/supervisory personnel for emergency response and critical incident communications.
  • Identify illegal drugs and hazardous materials; maintain knowledge of prescription drugs.
  • Enter/retrieve data to/from computer system including stolen property, arrest and wanted information, investigation data, and criminal/driving records; review crime statistics.
  • Assist with interdepartmental duties and city activities such as school zones, directing traffic, assisting animal control, security at city social events and athletic activities, special escorts, crowd/riot control, and other special assignments.
  • Transport information packets and documents to/from City Commissioner, Mayor, City Manager, City Attorney, and various departments/agencies as requested.
  • Document case information; assist with prosecution of offenders; appear in court to present evidence and testimony.
  • Attend community meetings and make school visitations; assist with community activities, programs, and crime prevention; may participate in DARE, Child Identification, and Crime Stoppers programs.
  • Respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information by telephone or in person from merchants, community/civic organizations, the general public, employees, superiors, and other individuals.
  • Exchange information with dispatchers, attorneys, court personnel, medical examiners, medical professionals, and other departments and agencies.
  • Maintain current field and code manuals, policy and procedures, employee handbooks, various maps, and related material for reference and review.
  • Attend shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental and city operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and laws.
  • Compose and prepare a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and other documents associated with daily responsibilities of this position; maintain administrative records and files.
  • Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and their representatives when activities or investigations are related to ongoing investigations within city jurisdiction.
  • Maintain regular and predictable in‑person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson as required.
  • Undergo and successfully complete drug and alcohol screening prior to employment, and future testing as required by the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
