TITLE:

SANITATION WORKER

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with collection, transport, and disposal of refuse.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

* Rides on sanitation truck to collect refuse along a designated route and dump trash into truck bed; walks/runs alongside truck or rides on steps at rear of truck between pickup locations as needed.

* Performs manual labor functions associated with collection, transport, and disposal of refuse, which may include dumping trash from dumpsters and trash containers, removing spilled garbage from ground, connecting chains to dumpsters, mowing grass, edging/trimming grounds, shoveling/raking garbage, lifting/moving heavy materials, directing traffic, etc.

* Utilizes safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; monitors safety conditions surrounding truck and advises truck driver of obstructions or unsafe conditions.

* Monitors quantity of refuse on truck; advises driver of need to pack/compress refuse.

* Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools associated with refuse removal, which may include a hopper, refuse packing mechanisms, mower, weedeater, shovel, rake, broom, etc.

* Transports, loads and unloads refuse, equipment and other materials.

* Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

* Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, and other documents.

* Receives various forms, reports, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

* Communicates with supervisor, employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

* Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.

* Maintains regular and predictable in-person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required.

* Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City's Drug and Alcohol policy.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Provides assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.

Performs related duties as required, necessary, or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

2 months previous experience and/or training involving refuse collection or manual labor; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. DESIRED: high school diploma or GED.
