Position: 7942 Bus Monitor/Bus Driver in Training

7942 Bus Monitor/Bus Driver in Training (10 positions available)

This position is for a bus monitor who is studying to become a bus driver. The bus monitor would work, receive pay and benefits as a bus monitor but would be expected to take CDL licensure classes and be licensed to drive a school bus within six months of employment with Henderson County Schools. At that time the bus monitor would transition to a Bus Driver (job class 7941).

Basic

Function
  • Bus Monitor: Assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required.
  • Bus Driver: Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and operator maintenance of vehicle; assist in the loading and unloading of physically and mentally handicapped students as necessary.
Knowledge of
  • Bus Monitor:
    Basic record‑keeping techniques; applicable sections of the KAR and other laws; health and safety regulations.
  • Bus Driver:
    Safe driving practices; provisions of State Motor Vehicle code and Kentucky Administration Regulations applicable to operation of vehicles transporting students; first aid practices; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Ability to
  • Bus Monitor:
    Maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements; understand and relate to children with special needs; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively orally and in writing; lift students according to established guidelines; maintain current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures; maintain routine records; observe health and safety regulations.
  • Bus Driver:
    Operate a school bus on designated routes; maintain order and discipline among students while driving; maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition; recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action; learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards; maintain routine records; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships; understand and follow oral and written directions; meet schedules and timelines;

    communicate effectively orally and in writing; learn, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assist in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.
Education and Experience
  • Bus Monitor:
    Any combination equivalent to high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Bus Driver:
    Any combination equivalent to high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. (as required by Kentucky law); one year experience in operation of a motor vehicle; valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver’s license with passenger endorsement; school bus certificate; must pass driving record check.
Other Requirements
  • Physical assessment; TB risk assessment; criminal background check; CAN check; drug screen; any additional training required by the Transportation Department.
  • Work schedule:

    180 days per year, minimum 4 hours per day.
Pay

Bus Monitor: $10.92 – $14.93 per hour. Bus Driver: $17.22 – $23.42 per hour.
