Position: 10175 Youth Programming Specialist
  • Base Pay $20.85 - $32.12 / Hour

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of paraprofessional work in support of library services in the Youth Programming Department. Works independently and as part of a team, often from general concepts and goals rather than established procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct guidance and minimal supervision from higher-level supervisory positions.

May exercise functional and technical supervision over volunteers in the absence of higher-level supervisory positions.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Essential and marginal functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Functions

Will be required to drive library and/or personal vehicle(s) on library business.

Plans, prepares, promotes, and implements programming for youth of interest to the community.

Informs library customers of library policy.

Promotes library services and programs.

Marginal Functions

May participate in community events to inform citizens about library services and programs.

Assists in building and maintaining partnerships with businesses and non‑profit organizations in the community to promote and support youth programs.

Handles and resolves questions/problems from customers and other institutions.

Attends meetings; may participate in committee service and special events.

May participate in professional associations and activities; read professional journals and publications; attend continuing education programs.

Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of
  • Basic child development.
  • Children’s literature.
  • Basic public library operations and organization.
  • Modern gaming systems and AV equipment.
  • Modern office methods, practices and procedures.
  • Vehicle operations – including safety standards.
  • Principles of intellectual freedom and the library Bill of Rights.
Skill in
  • Keyboard input at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and databases.
Demonstrate excellent customer service

Learn various library computer procedures, specialized software applications, and operate library computer equipment, AV equipment and machinery.

Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and writing.

Sort and file alpha‑numerically and perform basic math computations.

Work a varied schedule, which may change periodically, including weekends and evenings.

Work well with a wide variety of people and adapt to changes within the organization as they may occur.

Use initiative and judgment in a wide variety of situations.

Work independently and as part of a team.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years of college level coursework (40 college credits) or two (2) years library experience or (2) years of experience working with children.
  • Must have a valid Nevada driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one in accordance with state laws.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is subject to frequent travel around town.

Public service environment with a high volume of public contact, handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.

Normal physical activity including standing or sitting for extended periods. Walking, bending, stooping, lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds and pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds, upon occasion.

Phone usage, reading, speaking, and listening required.

Interaction with library users may include stressful situations related to enforcing library policies or resolving problems.
