JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of paraprofessional work in support of library services in the Outreach Department. Works independently and as part of a team, often from general concepts and goals rather than established procedures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direct guidance and minimal supervision from Outreach Coordinator and higher-level supervisory positions.

May exercise functional and technical supervision over assigned library specialists and other nonprofessional staff and volunteers in the absence of higher-level supervisory positions.

May coordinate and supervise volunteers.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Essential and marginal functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Functions:

Will be required to drive outreach and/or personal vehicle(s) throughout the community.

Participates in programs and community events to inform citizens about district/library services and programs.

Assists in building and maintaining partnerships with businesses and non-profit organizations in the community to promote and support programs, services, and outreach.

Assists in compiling information and data for a variety of statistical reports; maintains a variety of statistical records; assists in database cleanups.

Works in public capacity in the community; conducts reference interviews with library users in person or by telephone and assists them in locating materials and sources of information; instructs customers in library usage; readers’ advisory.

May work public services desk as needed.

Plans, prepares, promotes and implements programming of interest to the community.

Informs library customers of library policy.

Interprets policies, procedures, and administration rules and regulations to library staff and library users; investigates complaints and problems and recommends corrective action to resolve complaints or problems.

Instructs and assists library users in use of technology, devices, electronic resources, and other library materials; troubleshoots and maintains various pieces of equipment.

Handles and resolves questions/problems from customers and other institutions.

Supervises volunteers including recruiting, training, scheduling and providing tasks to be completed.

May serve as Person in Charge, as assigned.

Marginal Functions:

Participates in professional associations and activities; reads professional journals and publications; is aware of current trends in public library services; attends continuing education programs.

Attends meetings; may participate in committee service and special events.

Participates in library opening and closing procedures as needed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Principles of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights.

Vehicle operations – including safety standards.

Standard library reference tools and the library collection and resources.

Youth & Adult programming, outreach, community partnerships, and other related aspects important to outreach services.

Methods and techniques of reference interviews.

Basic public library operations and organization.

Principles and procedures of project planning and administration.

Modern office methods, practices, and procedures.

Skill in:

Keyboarding at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and databases.

Ability to:

Plan and implement programming, including read stories aloud.

Work well with a wide variety of people and children and adapt to changes within the organization as they may occur.

Read and interpret maps.

Provide readers’ advisory and reference services for library users.
