Mechanical Engineer - HVAC Designer

Austal Australia is delivering multiple naval shipbuilding and sustainment programs for the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Border Force, and the Department of Defence, employing approximately 1,000 people in facilities in located Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.

Austal and the Commonwealth of Australia are currently negotiating a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) that will support the Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Enterprise and the delivery of multiple new defence force shipbuilding projects, such as Landing Craft-Medium and Landing Craft-Heavy for the Australian Army.

Now signed, the SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce, as we deliver both existing and new programs under a long‑term partnership. It will also enable the design and construction of vessels at our Henderson shipyard and marks a major step forward in establishing enduring shipbuilding capability within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia.

To achieve this, we are building a highly skilled team, to engage with local industry and supply chains, and work on complex, large‑scale projects that reflect Austal’s proven capabilities and trusted performance.

As a key member of the design and engineering team the Mechanical Engineer / HVAC Designer will provide support to the Design and Drafting of a vessel from concept through to delivery.

• Produce accurate and high‑quality HVAC design documentation that meets procedural, regulatory, and audit requirements.
• Ensure HVAC systems comply with relevant regulatory authorities, specifications, and customer requirements.
• Provide technical support and maintain professional relationships across design & engineering, production and project teams.
• Champion innovation and cost‑effective solutions, actively contributing to process improvements and waste reduction.

• Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)
• or Diploma of Engineering Technical (HVAC, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning) or Certificate IV in Engineering (HVAC, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning) with appropriate work experience
• The following skills are not essential however highly desirable:
  • Good knowledge of maritime regulations and applicable HVAC ISO and Australian Standards.
  • Competent in heat load calculations, equipment selection and ductwork design.
  • Hands‑on experience in the installation, servicing, maintenance and commissioning of a wide range of HVAC systems.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft office, AutoCAD & report writing.
