The RoleThis is a technical leadership position for a senior controls engineer who is ready to own both the engineering and the people side of project delivery. You'll lead a team of engineers executing complex automation projects, drive technical direction, and serve as the senior technical authority on everything your team produces. You'll also be a key voice in business development—sitting in on project pursuits, contributing to proposals, and helping win work.
This is not a pure management role. The right person still has deep technical roots and stays close to the work.
What You'll Be Doing Technical Leadership- Set and enforce design standards, engineering philosophies, and QMS practices across your team
- Serve as the senior technical resource on complex or high‑risk projects
- Collaborate with project managers to ensure deliverables are executed on time and under budget
- Stay current on emerging technologies, platforms, and best practices in controls integration
- Provide mentorship, impromptu training, and technical guidance to engineers at all levels
- Own the technical and commercial success of multiple simultaneous projects
- Serve as the primary client contact on assigned projects
- Manage scope changes, generate and administer change orders independently
- Accurately estimate task duration, difficulty, and resource requirements
- Identify and mitigate project risk proactively
- Collaborate with the BD team on proposals, presentations, and project pursuits
- Directly manage a team of engineers—hiring, development, performance, and retention
- Assign team members to projects based on skills and workload
- Provide regular, constructive feedback and recognize high performers
- Monitor team capacity and communicate staffing needs proactively
- Build a positive, collaborative team culture focused on accountability and growth
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 13+ years of controls/automation engineering experience
- 3+ years in a Senior Engineering Team Lead or equivalent leadership role
- Deep technical expertise in controls integration—BAS, SCADA, PLC/HMI, or related platforms
- Experience across district energy, life sciences, or mission critical environments strongly preferred
- Hands‑on experience with platforms such as Niagara/Tridium, Ignition, Metasys, Siemens Desigo, or similar
- PE licensure or relevant industry certifications strongly preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Project or equivalent PM tools
- Strong client‑facing communication and business development instincts
