Rawle & Henderson LLP, a leading civil litigation firm with offices across the Mid‑Atlantic region, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Controller to lead the firm’s accounting and financial operations. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer/Executive Director and works closely with firm leadership to support the financial integrity, operational efficiency, and long‑term profitability of the firm.
This is a fully on‑site position based in our Philadelphia headquarters.
Position OverviewThe Controller will oversee all accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance activities for the firm. The ideal candidate will bring significant law firm experience, a strong understanding of partnership accounting and tax, and a proactive, solutions‑oriented approach to financial management.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Operations & Reporting
- Oversee all general ledger activity, including month‑end and year‑end close processes
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and analysis
- Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting policies
- Manage reconciliations of all firm, trust, and escrow accounts
Budgeting, Forecasting & Strategy
- Partner with the Chief Operating Officer to lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting
- Monitor firm performance against budget and strategic objectives
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) at both firm and client levels
- Provide financial insights related to profitability, realization, utilization, and cash flow
- Build financial models to support strategic decision‑making
Firm Performance & Profitability
- Collaborate with firm leadership to evaluate and improve financial performance
- Analyze billing, collections, work‑in‑process, and client profitability
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and margins
Systems & Process Improvement
- Manage and optimize accounting and time & billing systems
- Evaluate and implement enhancements to financial systems and reporting tools
- Work cross‑functionally to streamline workflows and improve data integrity
Tax, Audit & Compliance
- Oversee partnership tax planning and reporting
- Support the firm’s annual audit and serve as liaison to external auditors
- Ensure compliance with applicable financial and regulatory requirements
Payroll & Cash Management
- Oversee payroll processing and reporting (ADP preferred)
- Monitor daily cash position, banking activity, and line of credit
- Manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning
Accounts Payable
- Oversee accounts payable operations, including vendor management and payment processing
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of partnership accounting and tax requirements preferred
- Proficiency in technical accounting research and application
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and financial modeling
- Experience with accounting and financial systems (Aderant strongly preferred)
- Experience with payroll systems (ADP preferred)
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required
- CPA preferred but not required
- Significant progressive law firm accounting experience, including leadership role as a Controller
- Familiarity with legal applications and matter‑centric platforms is a plus
