Overview

The Director of Student Health is responsible for managing all aspects of the Office of Student Health within the Division of Student Affairs (DOSA). Responsibilities include maintaining accurate student health and immunization records, providing health records to student clinical rotation sites, evaluating acute illnesses, performing some outpatient procedures, providing wound care, ordering labs and diagnostic tests including drug screenings, sponsoring vaccine clinics (flu and immunizations), and providing health education and counseling.

The role collects pertinent student data and coordinates with other team members for appropriate student intervention, working cooperatively with the DOSA team. Responsibilities
  • Evaluation of acute illness (sore throat, cough, ear infection, pink eye, etc.).
  • Short term refills; suture lacerations, splint or wrap strained ankles, fingers, etc.
  • Perform physical exams as needed, and include a chaperone when appropriate.
  • Order labs, diagnostic tests or radiology imaging; provide referrals and send all medical records to referring physician s office.
  • Wound care including dressings, suture/staple removal; perform outpatient procedures such as urinalysis, pregnancy test, rapid Strep test, glucometer.
  • Send out cultures (urine, throat); provide customized lab requisition forms for Quest and Primex.
  • Compile a list of referrals for specialists, urgent care, dentist, etc.; perform blood pressure and glucose checks.
  • Provide required vaccines to students; manage immunization record keeping and reminders for expiring or missing immunizations.
  • Leadership responsibilities including leading the Student Health Center staff team; hire, train, evaluate, and supervise staff; oversee administrative duties in the Student Health Center.
  • Collaborate with other providers in the Health Center; deliver health education and counseling; lecture for brown bag lectures and campus presentations; guest speaker or instructor for programs.
  • Troubleshoot insurance discrepancies or claims verification; communicate with rotation facilities regarding immunizations or documents.
  • Clerical services for graduates (providing health records or results) and sponsor clinics for flu (employees, students, and family members), PPD and other immunizations as requested.
  • Communicate with students and programs about immunizations and urine drug screening; order random drug screenings and coordinate toxicology with Quest Diagnostics.
  • Verify positive urine drug tests; work with the Dean of Students following institutional policy; immunization record keeping and reminders for rotations.
  • Maintain immunization letters and upload updates; email updated letters to students and forward to the clinical education department.
  • Administrative responsibilities including copying, faxing, emailing, or mailing health records to clinical rotation sites or students upon request; submit claims verification or medical records to insurance companies as supporting documentation.
  • Serve on university committees (e.g., Behavior Intervention Team, Alcohol and Drug Committee) and co-author biennial reviews; schedule appointments and manage inquiries.
  • Order educational pamphlets for student displays; enter and maintain data in the appropriate web-based software; maintain medical supplies for the Student Health Center.
  • Collaborate with Student Counseling, OASIS, and Dean of Students on stress management and prevalent issues; negotiate with local radiology facilities and laboratories for discount rates for university students.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Master s Degree.
  • Unencumbered Physician Assistant License in the State of Nevada.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices underlying the field of student health.
  • Experience in a higher education setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with people from diverse demographic backgrounds.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Leadership abilities; professional judgment; strong communication and organizational skills.
