Butchery Manager

A look into the role

The Butchery Manager will manage all aspects of the department to achieve sales, margin, cost, stock and customer service targets. You will lead a dedicated team, maintain hygiene standards, and contribute to the store’s role in the local community.

As Butchery Manager you will:
  • Act as a dedicated SPAR and EUROSPAR brand ambassador, leading the department day‑to‑day.
  • Take pride in running the department as if it were your own.
  • Ensure the department meets agreed targets and operates within set budgets.
  • Identify initiatives to improve performance and KPIs and implement them in consultation with the Area Manager.
  • Maintain premises, fixtures, fittings and stock in accordance with company policies.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and company policies on cash management, security, stock, wastage, customer service, health and safety, and food safety.
  • Recruit, train, organise and control the appropriate level and calibre of staff to trade within opening hours.
  • Manage people leadership throughout the employee lifecycle: recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, engagement, discipline, reward and retention.
  • Foster a positive employee culture where team members feel valued and engaged.
  • Lead by example, role‑modeling company values and recognise team members who align with them.
  • Ensure compliance with all company and legislative regulations regarding food safety, cash management, trading standards, health and safety, security and due diligence.
  • Build a culture of continuous improvement and encourage team involvement in developing and implementing new ideas.
  • Support the Store Manager in community engagement, volunteering and fundraising events.
What we’re looking for…

Essential Criteria
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a similar butchery role.
  • Previous experience of leading or supervising others.
  • Successful track record of managing targets and controllable costs.
  • Target‑driven with experience working towards KPIs and continuous improvement.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Customer‑focused, passionate about local butchery and able to motivate others to deliver outstanding service.
  • Strong leadership and the ability to develop a high‑performing team.
  • Excellent time‑management, delegation and problem‑solving skills.
  • High standards of personal presentation and hygiene.
  • Team‑player, able to work well with colleagues.
  • Experience of managing targets and controlling costs.
  • Food safety training, level 2 equivalent.
  • Age 18 years or older.
  • Flexible approach to working hours.
Desirable Criteria
  • Vocational butchery Apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds.
