Overview
Senior Environmental Scientist/Ecologist job derson, NV.
We are seeking a Senior Scientist/Ecologist to join our Henderson/Las Vegas, NV office. Your role:
- Conduct/participate in natural resource field investigations, including but not limited to waters of the US; potential habitat for threatened and endangered species; vegetative community; presence/absence surveys, specimen collection and handling; construction monitoring; and stormwater and erosion control monitoring and compliance.
- Prepare technical report of findings; support preparation of permits and NEPA documents and provide peer reviews of reports prepared by others.
- Act as an Authorized Biologist for Mojave Desert Tortoise.
- Serve as an in‑field team leader for junior staff and technicians and coordinate with other Authorized Biologists.
- Plan field work and coordinate with various parties regarding timing and location.
- Serve as an in‑field team leader for health and safety requirements, including preparation of safety documents and adherence to company safety protocols and procedures.
- Maintain field notes and other collected data in an organized and useful fashion to meet project objectives.
- Effectively communicate the results of studies performed to project management staff.
- Support proposal scope, technical approaches, and fee estimates.
- Serve as an in‑field point of contact for clients, subcontractors, and other parties.
- May assist in the management of projects.
- Occasional work in afternoons/weekends as project monitoring requires; not on a regular basis.
- Perform other duties as the Supervisor may deem necessary from time to time.
- B.S./B.A. or M.S. in a field of Natural Resources such as Wildlife Biology, Botany, Conservation Biology, or Ecology. Scientists with 8–10 years of experience after a bachelor's or 5–8 years after a master's are typically required; the incumbent usually has at least 10 years of experience.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, technical writing, computer, and communication skills are desired.
- Experience in identification of waters of the United States (including wetlands);
Section 404/401 permitting, including Nationwide Permits, Pre‑construction Notifications, Regional General Permits, and possibly Individual Permits. - Ability to obtain authorization from the USFWS.
- Familiarity with regional flora and fauna.
- Experience as an Authorized Biologist conducting Mojave Desert tortoise surveys is preferred.
- Experience with BLM plant surveys and other rare plant surveys in California and Nevada is preferred.
- Knowledge of impact analysis including NEPA and related documentation.
- Stormwater and erosion compliance experience.
- Wetland and stream condition assessment and mitigation experience.
- Basic stream hydrologic principles.
- GIS skills and GPS equipment familiarity.
- General understanding of one or more of the following industries: infrastructure, transportation, state and local governments, or water quality.
- Prior experience with the Los Angeles and Sacramento District of the USACE and NDOT projects is preferred.
- Experience with the Walla Walla and Portland/Seattle Districts of the USACE is helpful.
- Previous absence and presence survey experience and USFWS scientific permits or ability to obtain permits is preferred.
- Routine travel is expected.
- Must be confident working in harsh and inhospitable outdoor climates in the Western and Southwestern U.S. all year.
- Maintain a keen awareness of safety protocols in the field and office.
- May require use of a company vehicle; a valid driver's license and a record meeting company policy are required.
