Job Description

Reports To: Principal and/or Counseling Supervisor

Supervises: Counselor aides and clerical assistants (optional coordination)

Purpose: To help all students develop skills in personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Program Planning: Establish and develop the school counseling program, involving other staff in decision making, and develop activities/resources to implement and evaluate the program.
  • Counseling: Provide individual and group counseling services to meet developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students.
  • Consulting: Consult with students, parents, teachers, and community personnel to assist in meeting student needs.
  • Coordinating: Coordinate all counseling services and assist with the implementation of student services; assist teachers with the Guidance Curriculum.
  • Student Appraisal: Interpret test results and other student data and assist teachers with educational placement using appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Professional Practices and Development: Adhere to ethical standards, policies, and procedures; participate in professional associations and advance professional knowledge and skills.
  • Learning Management System: Attend training and become proficient in using the LMS for an online program.
  • Minimum Training and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a Master’s degree in counseling or equivalent combination of training and experience that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Special Requirements

    Must be licensed by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in counseling or able to obtain licensure.

    Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
    • Physical:
      Able to operate computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators, exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
    • Data Conception:
      Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics.
    • Interpersonal Communication:
      Ability to speak, sign, and convey information, including giving instructions.
    • Language Ability:
      Read various correspondence; prepare reports and forms following punctuation, grammar, style guidelines.
    • Intelligence:
      Apply logical/scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions.
    • Verbal Aptitude:
      Record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions.
    • Numerical Aptitude:
      Use mathematical formulas, percentages, descriptive statistics.
    • Form/Spatial Aptitude:
      Inspect items for proper dimensions.
    • Motor Coordination:
      Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
    • Manual Dexterity:
      Handle office equipment; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
    • Color Discrimination:
      Not required.
    • Interpersonal Temperament:
      Deal with people; adaptable under stress and emergencies.
    • Physical Communication:
      Speak and hear; communicate via telephone.
    • Hearing:
      Perceive sounds by ear; communicate via telephone.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Ethical guidelines in counseling; federal, state and local laws.
    • Organization and administration principles.
    • North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
    • Counseling and motivating students.
    • Plan, coordinate, evaluate student programs.
    • Coordinate support services personnel and outside agencies.
    • Use common office machines and computer programs.
    • Maintain accurate records and statistics; develop reports.
    • Express ideas orally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain effective relationships for assignments.
