Provides direct patient care to patients using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice. This includes Labor and Delivery, Post Partum and Newborn Nursery.
Reports to:
Women and Infants Director.
- Complete initial nursing histories, assess patients' conditions, and develop an individualized plan of care for patients assigned to the unit.
- Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, consult with other specialists as required and adjust nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Accurately administer medications and perform procedures that cannot be delegated.
- Assess labor progression.
- Manage induction of labor and cervical ripening.
- Deal competently with medical emergencies including prolapsed cord, breech delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, precipitous delivery, uterine rupture, management of meconium, abruptio placenta, placenta previa.
- Perform fetal heart monitoring.
- Make assessment of labor progress using Friedman labor curve.
- Manage pregnancy‑caused hypertension.
- Initiate intravenous therapy and use of infusion pumps.
- Participate in emergency drug administration.
- Assist with vacuum extraction.
- Assess condition of the newborn, including gestational exam.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation and assist with intubation if required.
- Recognize and manage neonatal sepsis.
- Work with the neonatal unit to care for preterm infants and others with special problems.
- Perform gavage feeding if required.
- Monitor for neonatal hypoglycemia.
- Monitor thermal regulation of the newborn.
- Recognize neonatal jaundice.
- Teach and supervise the proper performance of nursing acts that have been delegated to others and monitor nursing care of other health care team members.
- Promote patient/client education and involve the patient and significant others in the implementation of health goals.
- Understand and adhere to JCAHO standards as they apply to the nursing profession.
- Participate in fire, safety, disaster, and infection control educational programs and exercises.
- Participate in specific patient quality assessment activities, including chart review.
- Comply with certification/recertification requirements of the position and attend continuing education courses to remain current in the field.
• Nursing Associate Degree or Completion of an Accredited Nursing Diploma Program.
• Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) is preferred.
• A current North Carolina or compact stated Registered Nurse (RN) license is required upon hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required within 30 days of hire.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) is required within 90 days from hire date.
