JOB DESCRIPTION OF THE DISTRICT LEAD NURSE

REPORTS TO: Superintendent or Designee and Principal

PURPOSE: To provide school nursing services at the school level.

LOCATION: School Based

MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10

• MAJOR FUNCTION: Provides and supports consultationand training for school staff that performs or assists with medical procedures ordered by a physician.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Provides training and/or written information to staff concerning student's written health plans.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Performs reviews of student immunization records for schools, as needed.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Assists school staff with understanding of immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Provides support to students, staff, and parents in regards to medical plans of care.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Screens health appraisals for students.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Attends workshops and other educational programs to increase nursing knowledge and skills.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Provides follow-up evaluations on students, as required; recommends corrective action where problems are identified.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Serves as the coordinator for health planning for the school in conjunction with students, families, school staff, and physicians.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Based on referral, requests appropriate physician's orders, and develop Individual Health Plans and/or Emergency Medical Plans for student with chronic diseases who require special measures or activity restrictions in a school.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Trains designated staff in administering medications and first aid per approved guidelines.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Utilizes advanced assessment skills in autonomous situations to make nursing judgments regarding complex student needs.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Coordinates with health organizations in partnership with the school.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Submits pertinent reports to the District and State in a timely fashion.
• MAJOR FUNCTION: Performs other related duties, as assigned.

• State of North Carolina Registered Nursing license;
• National Board Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) and certification by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or the Association of School Nurses (NASA);
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification;
• Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of North Carolina requirements;
• Prefer experience in school health.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, press releases, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently using a variety of technical or professional languages including counseling terminology.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the theories of descriptive statistics.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
