Job Description

Purpose
:
To help all students develop skills in personal‑social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development.

  • Program Planning – Establish the school‑counseling program, develop activities and resources, and evaluate program effectiveness. Involve other staff in decision‑making.
  • Counseling – Provide individual and group counseling services to meet developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students.
  • Consulting – Consult with students, parents, teachers, and community personnel to assist in meeting student needs.
  • Coordinating – Coordinate all counseling services and assist with the implementation of student services; assist teachers with the Guidance Curriculum.
  • Student Appraisal – Accurately interpret test results and other student data; assist teachers with educational placement using appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Professional Practices and Development – Adhere to ethical standards and school policies; participate in professional associations and upgrade knowledge and skills.
  • Learning Management System for Online Program – Attend professional development trainings to be proficient in the management system.
  • Minimum Training and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a Master’s degree in counseling or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Special Requirements

    Must be licensed by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in counseling or able to obtain licensure in this area.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Physical Requirements – Operate various equipment, lift up to 10 pounds occasionally, and perform light work that may require walking or standing.
    • Data Conception – Compare and judge functional characteristics of data, people, or things.
    • Interpersonal Communication – Speak or signal people to convey or exchange information; receive instructions and directions.
    • Language Ability – Read and prepare correspondence, reports, and forms; converse with poise and confidence.
    • Intelligence – Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
    • Verbal Aptitude – Record, deliver, and explain information; follow oral and written instructions.
    • Numerical Aptitude – Use mathematical formulas, percentages, and descriptive statistics.
    • Form/Spatial Aptitude – Inspect items for proper dimensions.
    • Motor Coordination – Coordinate hands and eyes for office equipment use.
    • Manual Dexterity – Handle a variety of office items with minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
    • Color Discrimination – Not required.
    • Interpersonal Temperament – Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; adapt under stress and emergencies.
    • Physical Communication – Talk and hear; use telephone communication.
    • Hearing – Perceive sounds by ear.

    Skills and Abilities
    • General knowledge of ethical guidelines, federal, state, and local laws, and educational standards.
    • Knowledge of organization and administration principles.
    • Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
    • Skill in counseling and motivating students.
    • Ability to plan, coordinate, and evaluate student programs.
    • Ability to coordinate support services and outside agencies.
    • Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and file maintenance.
    • Record‑keeping and analysis for meaningful reports.
    • Effective oral and written communication.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
