What you’ll do:

You’ll directly supervise designated employees and be responsible for the management of counseling services, which includes case management and reception/discharge procedures in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.

Essential Functions:
  • Serves as the unit classification committee chairperson; schedules appropriate unit personnel to participate in committee; monitors the committee documentation to ensure it is within policy; schedules Inmates to appear before the committee for assignment of appropriate custody levels, housing and work assignments, protection and safekeeping requests or as changes in their status warrant a review.
  • Provide staff training, evaluate staff performance and recommend and implement department and personnel changes as approved by the assistant warden in coordination with the human resources manager prior to implementation.
  • Ensure facility does not exceed its capacity.
  • Review housing and job assignments or changes in relation to medical restrictions or security needs including Security Threat Group (STG) of the Inmate.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate reports for submission in a timely manner as required.
  • Review that unit orientation is completed and all required contents are addressed within the required timeframe.
  • Ensure the Heat Restriction Roster is printed daily and given to security. Ensure all staff have read and are familiar with the directive.
  • Oversee changes to Inmate visitation list.
  • Responsible for Inmate grievance responses concerning classification matters.
  • Maintain Inmate job descriptions for every Inmate job within the facility.
  • Conduct self-audits and maintain documentation to meet ACA and contractual requirements.
  • Oversee count room activity.
  • Monitor Inmate drug testing to ensure contractual requirements.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of Inmate files and ensure files are transferred or scanned and monitored in accordance with policy.
  • It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

    Education and Experience Requirements:

    Bachelor’s Degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or United States Department of Education (USDE). Three (3) years full-time, wage-earning correctional custody, law enforcement, Inmate case management, or correctional unit operations experience. Each year of experience in excess of the required three (3) years may be substituted for thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis.

    One (1) year full-time, wage-earning Inmate classification experience. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

    Post Hire Requirements:

    Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and pass an annual background check, both of which must be approved by TDCJ.
