Boiler Design Engineer (Mechanical Engineering)

Commercial & Industrial Boiler Systems

Relocation Assistance Available | Greater Knoxville, TN | Full-Time | On-Site

Design Boiler Systems That Power Industry

Engineer. Build. Improve. See Your Designs Built.

Boiler engineers are a unique group.

You understand that designing a boiler is more than pressure vessel design. It requires balancing thermal performance, mechanical integrity, fabrication, code compliance, manufacturability, and long‑term reliability into systems that perform safely for decades.

If you've designed commercial or industrial boiler systems and enjoy solving challenging engineering problems from concept through manufacturing, we'd like to speak with you.

My client is adding both a Mid‑Level Engineer and a Senior Engineer to an established engineering team responsible for designing custom steam and hot water boiler systems serving industrial and commercial customers throughout North America.

This is not a traditional mechanical design position. You'll work directly with manufacturing, fabrication, welding, quality, suppliers, and project teams to see your designs become finished products. Direct commercial or industrial boiler design engineering experience is strongly preferred. Engineers with significant ASME pressure vessel design experience, particularly involving engineered‑to‑order industrial equipment, who want to apply their expertise to commercial and industrial boiler systems are also encouraged to apply.

Whether your background includes firetube boilers, watertube boilers, steam generation systems, or industrial hot water boilers, you'll have the opportunity to design highly engineered systems from concept through production while working alongside experienced engineering and manufacturing professionals.

Why You'll Want This Role
  • Base salary of $100,000–$150,000 plus annual bonus depending on background, experience and qualifications.
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, paid vacation and holidays.
  • Design highly engineered, made‑to‑order commercial and industrial boiler systems.
  • See your designs progress from concept through fabrication and production.
  • Opportunity to influence future products while advancing into technical leadership.
  • Stable, well‑established manufacturing organization with relocation assistance.
What You'll Design
  • Firetube boiler systems
  • Watertube boiler systems
  • Steam boiler systems
  • Industrial hot water boiler systems
  • Boiler pressure parts
  • Mechanical piping systems
  • Engineered‑to‑order industrial equipment built in accordance with the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code
What You'll Be Doing
  • Design commercial and industrial boiler systems from concept through production.
  • Perform thermal, structural, and mechanical engineering calculations.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Support fabrication, manufacturing, inspection, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable ASME codes and customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, production, project management, and supply chain.
  • Troubleshoot engineering and manufacturing challenges while implementing practical design solutions.
  • Support continuous improvement and new product development.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor engineers (Senior Engineer).
  • Review, seal, and approve engineering documents (Senior Engineer).
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Commercial or industrial boiler design engineering experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Sections I and IV strongly preferred;
Section VIII experience is also valuable.
  • Experience with pressure‑retaining equipment, welding, fabrication, and engineered‑to‑order manufacturing.
  • Solid Works and/or AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred Technical Experience
  • Commercial boiler systems
  • Hot water boiler systems
  • Boiler manufacturing
  • ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code
Additional Qualifications Mid‑Level Engineer
  • Three or more years of relevant boiler engineering experience.
  • Ability and desire to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure in the near term.
  • Ability to review, seal, and approve engineering designs.
  • Experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
