Definition of PositionThe Sterile Processing Department Manager oversees all daily operations regarding the decontamination, sterilization, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment within the organization. They ensure compliance with regulatory standards. The SPD Manager manages: SPD staff (to include SPD Techs and an SPD educator), budget, policies, inventory control, reviews the daily/future OR schedule to anticipate needs, and quality assurance to support operating room efficiency.
They collaborate with other departments within the healthcare system.
Essential Job Functions
:
- Collect comprehensive data necessary to support sterile processing services
- Analyze data to develop ideas and support decisions relevant to the delivery of sterile processing services.
- Identify expected outcomes for sterile processing services.
- Develop the strategic plan and processes to attain expected outcomes for sterile processing services.
- Implement the strategic plan and processes for sterile processing services within the organizational structure.
- Coordinate implementation of sterile processing services using human and capital resources.
- Employ strategies to promote workplace safety and health in the sterile processing areas.
- Communicate the identified plan for sterile processing services to internal and external stakeholders.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the sterile processing services strategic plan toward achieving desired outcomes
- Guide quality improvement of sterile processing services using key indicators.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to improve sterile processing services.
- Support and integrate current evidence into sterile processing services.
- Use human and material resources efficiently to deliver safe, high-quality, and cost-effective sterile processing services.
- Provide guidance and coordinate education and competency verification activities for sterile processing personnel regarding professional guidelines, recommended practices, and regulatory and accreditation standards pertinent to sterile processing services.
- Collaborates with clinical education to maintain records to document ongoing educational and competency verification activities of sterile processing personnel.
- Provide guidance, support, and constructive feedback to the sterile processing services team.
- Able to teach and coach others.
- Evaluate sterile processing services team member performance.
- Manage departmental staffing, including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating the performance of technicians and support staff to ensure a competent and motivated team.
- Coordinate with surgical and clinical departments to ensure timely availability of sterile instruments and supplies, optimizing workflow and minimizing delays in patient care.
- Ensure sterile processing services team member compliance with organizational policies, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines.

Education:
Required:
High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred:
Graduate of a Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) program or Scrub Technologists Program or an Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology or an Applied Science degree in Nursing.
Licenses/ certifications/ registrations:
Required:
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
Preferred:
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) and Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS).
Experience:
Required:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in the operating room or sterile processing.
Preferred:
Minimum of 7 years of experience in the operating room or sterile processing.
Other:
Required:
Previous shift charge, Supervisor or Manager experience.
