Overview
The Electroencephalographic (EEG) technician is responsible to the Manager of sleep lab and the interpreting Neurologist. The EEG technician performs adult/pediatric standard and ambulatory Electroencephalograms (EEGs). This person will be responsible for the performance of EEGs in a competent and efficient manner. They will ensure accurate patient assessments, patient education and quality data acquisition. The individual will be responsible for maintenance of all lab equipment, infection control, patient safety, and an effective quality assurance program.
Thorough documentation, creation of concise preliminary reports, accurate billing and processing of interpreted study reports will also be done be this individual.
- Maintains current professional credentials and demonstrates competency through certification by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
- Performs routine and ambulatory EEG studies for adult and pediatric patients according to physician orders and established laboratory protocols.
- Conducts patient assessments prior to testing to identify contraindications, special needs, and safety concerns.
- Monitors patients' physical and psychological status throughout testing, utilizing critical thinking skills to ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Explains testing procedures, answers patient questions, and provides clear pre- and post-procedure instructions.
- Obtains accurate, artifact-free recordings while recognizing normal and abnormal EEG patterns and documenting significant events during testing.
- Applies electrodes using accepted techniques and verifies proper electrode placement and impedance.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with all HIPAA and organizational privacy standards.
- Accurately documents patient information, study findings, and technical observations in the electronic medical record.
- Prepares concise preliminary technical reports for physician interpretation.
- Processes finalized physician reports and ensures timely distribution to ordering providers.
- Completes accurate coding, billing, and charge capture documentation.
- Performs routine maintenance, calibration, cleaning, and troubleshooting of EEG equipment and promptly reports equipment issues.
- Maintains laboratory supplies and assists with inventory management.
- Adheres to infection prevention and control standards, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment between patients.
- Participates in departmental quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
- Maintains CPR certification and required continuing education to remain current with evolving neurodiagnostic practices.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
- Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education:
- High school/GED graduate
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with an emphasis on physical or biological sciences preferred.
Licenses/ Certifications/ Registrations
- EEG/Electroencephalographic Technologists: R. EEG T credential certification by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
- Graduate of an accredited Neurodiagnostic program, Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP), recognized be ABRET.
- Graduate from an accredited ASET program recognized be ABRET
- Current CPR certification
- Valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of current auto insurance
Experience:
- One-year clinical experience in EEG Lab.
- Skilled in ECGs, Heart Monitors and Stress Test
