Data Center Engineering Operations Area Manager

AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) manages the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure. The Data Center Engineering Operations Area Manager leads on‑site operations supporting data center equipment, ensuring reliable service and safety for our customers.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the on‑site management of shift technicians, senior shift technicians, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Maintain availability and performance of the Data Center availability zone.
- Participate in strategic planning projects and financial analysis.
- Manage 5 or more direct reports, including managers of managers.
- Negotiate and roll out contracts and space allocations.
- Oversee facility‑specific infrastructure build‑outs and campus expansions.
- Recruit, train, and develop staff.
- Execute the vision and goals for the team or department.
- Manage multiple site projects using project management principles.
- Set priorities, develop project plans, and deliver on budget and schedule.
- Maintain best practices, create work plans, monitor progress, and report performance.
- Coordinate with IT and business leaders to manage capacity, safety, reliability, and efficiency.
- Operate routine and emergency services for systems such as switch gear, generators, UPS, power distribution, chillers, cooling towers, and building monitoring systems.
- Assist in design and build of new facilities and efficiency projects.
- Oversee asset and inventory management.
- Lead metric reporting on critical facility operations.
The Data Center Engineering Operations Area Manager leads data center engineering operations, managing risk, maintenance, vendor performance, and metric reporting to ensure continuous uptime and operational excellence.
Basic Qualifications- 3+ years of people‑management and team‑development experience.
- Experience maintaining SLAs through proactive issue detection and reporting.
- Experience operating a mission‑critical team or product.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems in critical data center operations (feeders, transformers, generators, switch gear, UPS, PDU, chillers, pumps, air handling units, CRAC units).
- 5+ years of work in a management position with 5 or more direct reports.
- 5+ years in data center operations focused on building and equipment operations.
- Experience in root‑cause analysis, troubleshooting, or problem‑solving.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience in engineering work and managing large‑scale services.
The base salary range for this position is USD $ – $ per year.
