Job Summary:
The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse provides high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical and diagnostic procedures. The nurse is responsible for assessing, monitoring, and supporting patients in the immediate post-anesthesia period, managing pain and complications, and ensuring safe recovery before discharge or transfer.
This role involves caring for pre-anesthesia, post-anesthesia Phase I and II, and procedural sedation patients. The PACU RN serves as a patient advocate and ensures continuity of care in collaboration with the perioperative team.
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver safe and effective nursing care to patients in pre- and post-anesthesia phases, utilizing the nursing process.
Assess, monitor, and record patients’ physiological and psychological status during recovery from anesthesia or sedation.
Manage airways, monitor vital signs, and intervene as needed to prevent or manage complications.
Administer medications and IV therapies as ordered, including pain management and antiemetics.
Provide preoperative education and postoperative instructions to patients and families.
Assist with procedural sedation and monitoring of local-only cases in the OR as needed.
Maintain accurate documentation in the Epic EMR system.
Participate in on-call rotation for the PACU on a regularly scheduled basis.
Ensure adherence to infection control, patient safety, and hospital policies at all times.
Supervise and direct assigned personnel to ensure consistent delivery of quality care.
Requirements
Required Qualifications:
Licensure/
Certifications:
Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license – state of Oregon (must be active at time of submission)
BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA approved
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA approved
PALS preferred
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of recent PACU or peri-anesthesia nursing experience
Experience providing procedural sedation and caring for post-anesthesia patients
Epic EMR experience preferred
