The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology RN provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing invasive interventional procedures such as angiography, embolization, cardiac catheterization, and other minimally invasive interventions. The RN works collaboratively with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality patient care. Responsibilities include use of the nursing process, adherence to standards and policies, patient advocacy, and supervision of assigned personnel.

The RN may be on call for the unit and reports to the Unit Nurse Manager, House Supervisor, or RN Team Leader.

• Nursing/Circulator Role
  • Administer medications as ordered, including anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast, and emergency drugs.
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist with procedures as needed.
  • Act as patient advocate and anticipate needs of the interventionalist.
  • Recognize and respond rapidly to complications (arrhythmia, bleeding, contrast reaction, stroke alerts, cardiac arrest).
• Contrast Allergy Management Collaboration
  • Work with Rad Tech and physicians to identify and address contrast allergies or sensitivities.
  • Participate in pre‑procedure discussions regarding contrast agents.
  • Ensure allergy considerations are communicated during the timeout.
• Moderate Sedation Role
  • Monitor patient for moderate sedation, ensuring continuous assessment.
  • Verify ASA classification and consult anesthesia for ASA IV or greater.
  • Provide sedation per protocol and monitor vital signs, hemodynamics, oxygenation, ventilation, level of consciousness, and responses.
  • Provide appropriate nursing interventions for complications.
• Scrub Role
  • Function as scrub technologist using sterile techniques during procedures.
  • Prepare and organize sterile instruments, guide wires, catheters, sheaths, embolic materials, and procedural trays.
  • Anticipate physician needs and respond quickly during critical moments.
  • Familiarity with vascular anatomy, device sizing, catheter selection, and procedural flow.
  • Communicate with monitor person to ensure procedure activities and times are documented.
• Monitor Role (Hemodynamic & Procedural Monitoring)
  • Record hemodynamic data, pressures, and procedural events.
  • Operate and troubleshoot monitoring systems.
  • Document supplies, implants, contrast usage, and procedural details.
  • Communicate real‑time findings to the procedural team.
• Peri‑Procedure Support
  • Assist with patient preparation, positioning, and equipment placement.
  • Verify allergies, NPO status, renal function, and other clinical factors.
  • Perform patient identification, procedure verification, and timeout processes.
  • Perform sheath pulls and vascular access management as needed.
• Department Support
  • Manage supplies, restock rooms, track expiration dates, and manage inventory.
  • Assist with room turnover, post‑procedure cleanup, sharps and biohazard disposal, and equipment readiness.
  • Ensure devices such as ultrasound and IVUS are cleaned, charged, and stored properly.

• Education
  • Required:
    
    Graduate of an accredited professional nursing school.
  • Desired: BSNB.
• Experience
  • Required:
    
    At least one year in critical care, emergency, cath lab, or IR.
  • Desired:
    At least three years in IR or Cath Lab, conscious sedation training, monitor role experience.
• Licenses & Certifications
  • RN license in Oregon.
  • BLS and ACLS (required).
  • Preferred: RCIS, NIH Stroke Scale, IV certification.
• Skills & Knowledge
  • Proficiency with infusion pumps, PCA pumps, and related equipment.
  • Ability to care for patients of diverse age, culture, and psychosocial needs.

  • Bilingual and/or English‑Spanish speaking preferred.
