Job Overview
Data Center Engineering Technician – responsible for maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting mission‑critical electrical and mechanical equipment in AWS data centers. Role includes hands‑on work on diesel generators, fuel systems, three‑phase electrical systems, UPSs, PDUs, wet‑cell batteries, HVAC equipment, fire/life safety systems, and building automation.
Key Job Responsibilities- Daily building rounds to monitor and record information from electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment to ensure 24/7 reliability and availability.
- Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Management System (EPMS).
- Assist in troubleshooting facility and rack‑level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA).
- Perform rack installs, decommissioning, and preventive maintenance (PM) within SLAs.
- Diagnose, root‑cause, and repair electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Write technical documentation to support change management programs.
- Manage daily work requests, complete projects from conception to completion.
- Provide on‑site support for contractors, sub‑contractors, and vendors while ensuring compliance with established practices, procedures, and local legislation.
- Adapt to variable work schedules, including up to 12‑hour shifts and rotations; some locations have on‑call rotations.
- Support operations at multiple sites as required.
- Will regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently.
- Participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
- Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder.
- Walk, use hands and fingers, handle objects, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, work above shoulders, grasp, carry, push and pull objects into position.
- Wear ear protection as required.
- Ability to travel or commute between data center locations as needed; travel over 50 miles or commute less than 50 miles to active data center sites.
- Willingness to work temporarily at alternative sites during training periods or until assigned facility is operational.
The technician is the front line for electrical and mechanical preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, reporting to the Data Center Facility Manager (FM). They maintain operational data center equipment, including generators, fuel systems, electrical systems, mechanical HVAC components, fire/life safety equipment, building automation, and general facilities equipment.
Basic Qualifications- 1+ year of electrical or mechanical experience, or 1+ year in data center/mission‑critical facilities (e.g., hospital, military, public safety).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1+ year experience with Microsoft Office products.
- 2+ years of data center engineering experience.
- Technical training (Military Trade School).
- Associate degree or higher in a related field.
