Data Center Optical Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Center Optical Engineer to support work in customer data centers and co-location facilities. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliable installation, maintenance, and operation of optical transport infrastructure. You will serve as the primary interface between the customer and the Client's vendors, auditing work and maintaining high standards of quality.
The ideal candidate has strong hands‑on experience with fiber installations, migrations, remediation, break/fix activities, and remote hands support. This position requires excellent technical expertise, customer communication skills, and the flexibility to travel to non‑home market locations for several weeks at a time, up to 25% of the time.
Responsibilities- Conduct daily audits of work performed in customer data centers and co‑location facilities, providing immediate feedback to third‑party technicians.
- Interact directly with customers through ticketing systems and in person, providing clear updates and status reports.
- Support fiber installations, decommissioning, remediation, migrations, and break/fix activities.
- Perform and supervise optical testing and troubleshooting using optical power meters, stabilized light sources, Visual Fault Locators (VFLs), Optical Time‑Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), and other optical test equipment.
- Execute work by accurately following Methods of Procedure (MoPs), engineering documentation, vendor documentation, and network diagrams.
- Read and interpret cut sheets and physical network design documents to ensure proper cable routing, port connectivity, and cable management.
- 3–15 years of experience in data center operations or a similar technical environment with direct customer interaction.
- Team lead or technical lead experience.
- Strong hands‑on experience with connectorized fiber optic cabling, including single‑mode and multi‑mode fiber, LC connectors, fan‑outs, and structured cabling.
- Experience with optical transport testing and troubleshooting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational, documentation, and Microsoft Office skills.
- Ability to multitask and work effectively in fast‑paced, high‑availability environments.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and operational best practices.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% as business needs require.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working at heights and in varying environmental conditions.
