Position: Social Service Spc. / Hernando / Safety

Job Overview

Statewide Safety Unit investigator. Candidate will be housed in the county closest to their location. Requires comprehensive training and mandatory testing before employment and advancement.

Responsibilities
  • Receive investigation assignments and conduct historical checks of records to determine prior agency involvement.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of child maltreatment (abuse, neglect, exploitation).
  • Investigate reports of child maltreatment, including human trafficking, maltreatment in care, and child fatalities, through home visits, site visits, and structured interviews.
  • Conduct safety and risk assessments to determine child safety and make ethical, fact‑based recommendations for continued services; monitor safety plans and refer for appropriate services.
  • Prepare for, attend, and testify in court hearings and administrative appeals related to investigations.
  • Participate in collaborative internal team meetings and scheduled staffing meetings.
  • Schedule and attend forensic interviews, autopsies, and other meetings regarding investigations.
  • Document initial and ongoing work in accordance with established protocols, practices, and policies; finalize completed investigations with supportive documents uploaded to a shared drive and send final notifications per policy.
  • Serve as mentor and peer support for new staff.
  • Build professional relationships and collaborate with law enforcement, legal, and other stakeholders to support the agency’s investigative work.
  • Use data to manage and plan the workday for timely initiation and completion of work.
  • Provide routine travel in personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed per DFA guidelines).
  • May require work beyond the assigned geographic area and/or special assignments.
  • On‑call after work hours and on weekends in designated coverage area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Training and Qualifications

8 weeks of training: 4 weeks of on‑site training (every other week) and 4 weeks of on‑the‑job training. Must pass a comprehensive test before continued employment and advancement.
