Summer Camp Instructor – Going Places Summer Camp, Herndon, VA
Location:
Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave, Herndon VA 20170.
Dates:
Week 1 June 29 to July 2;
Week 2 July 20 to July 24. Training:
June 25 and 26.
Staff may work anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours vary by site, position, and day. Two shifts: 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. and 12 p.m.–4 p.m.

BEST Education and Fable Vision co‑developed the "Going Places" Summer Camp, based on the award‑winning book by founders and twin brothers Paul and Peter H. Reynolds. Activities and challenges are based on themes that illustrate the critical life skills known as the 4
Cs – communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
We need staff who embody these beliefs and passionately impact youth.
Essential Responsibilities- Implement the Going Places curriculum for groups of 15–30 campers.
- Teach the curriculum as written, adapting as needed to improve the camper experience or accommodate individual campers, and capture feedback for the curriculum developers.
- Collaborate with the camp team to create a memorable experience for campers.
- Maintain safe environments for all campers and provide leadership and camp spirit.
- Contribute to and participate in daily camp activities, including check‑in/out, opening/closing ceremonies, and snack & lunch supervision.
- Provide exceptional customer service to parents and camp partners.
- Assist with daily setup and cleanup, as well as start‑up and break‑down at the beginning and end of summer.
- Report to the Camp Director and receive professional development and ongoing coaching.
- Genuine love and interest in working with children and/or education.
- Maintain an excellent work ethic, high energy, and exceptional enthusiasm each day.
- Flexibility to meet changing needs while balancing multiple tasks efficiently.
- Collaborate on a team, open to feedback, and desire to grow professionally.
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication with families and guardians.
- CPR/First Aid certified or willing to become certified by start of camp.
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID‑19 by start of camp.
- College degree preferred but not required.
- Preferred experience with elementary students.
- Experience working with kids or in a camp setting a plus.
- Staff meetings: during regular work hours before or after the start of programming.
- 2–12 hours of online training before camp begins.
- Training and setup days: participate in two mandatory training and setup days before camp starts.
- Camp cleanup: participate in cleaning and packing up camp for an additional 1–5 hours in the last week of camp.
- Hourly rate with overtime at 1.5× in accordance with state and federal requirements. Exact rate is included in the offer letter.
- Hourly training rate for 2–12 hours of online training and for 2 days on‑site setup/training.
- Positions are temporary, seasonal, non‑benefited, and do not include paid vacation time.
- Some lifting and carrying up to 60 lbs.
- Typing, writing, reading.
- Seeing, hearing, speaking, both nearby and at a distance.
- Use hands and fingers to help with classroom supplies and operate equipment.
- Frequent sitting.
- Standing, walking, kneeling.
