We’re seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer who will transform data center infrastructure through strategic design and robust solutions. In this role, you’ll collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to develop resilient, sustainable, and innovative engineering designs that push the boundaries of technological infrastructure.
The Civil/Structural Engineer in FRE-CSA provides the global vision, rationale, and recommendations to leadership teams for next-generation data center civil design and remediation on new and existing sites, while ensuring current civil systems meet performance and operational standards.
As a Civil/Structural Engineer in FRE-CSA, you will lead civil engineering initiatives with strategic vision while demonstrating competence in structural engineering project execution. You will work within and lead cross‑functional teams that include technical program management, product management, structural engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, supply chain management, operations, safety and security, and legal. You will participate in external forums and consortiums to understand current trends and developments within the industry.
Responsibilities include leading the civil/structural design, strategy, product innovation, development, and audit/remediations of existing sites. This role communicates technical decisions to senior engineers and drives continuous improvements with our designs.
Key Job Responsibilities- Work with a team of multi‑disciplinary professionals on conceptual design, build, and retrofit projects at existing data centers.
- Create, review and release data center civil and structural improvements and designs.
- Drive refinements to the Basis of Design, product development, sustainability, and template specifications for civil and structural systems to support continuous improvement of future data center designs.
- Serve as a technical advisor for projects including underground services, water infrastructure designs and compliance, drainage solutions, foundations and retaining structures, roads and structural systems.
- Create, review and release civil/structural design RFPs.
- Manage external civil/structural design consultants through audit, design and implementation of projects while coordinating with internal engineering, construction and other stakeholder teams.
- Lead initiatives aimed at improving quality, schedule, consistency or reducing costs to in‑flight and future data center construction and improvement projects.
- Work on multiple data center build and capital improvement projects simultaneously without compromising safety and availability constraints.
- Visit project locations in the AMER region and provide subject matter guidance to partnering teams.
- Positively influence external vendors and consultants’ designs and deliverables to meet requirements and timelines.
Amazon has a global presence; therefore 15–25% travel is necessary. Regional support will be part of the job, and some travel will be required on short notice. Support could consist of auditing/inspecting data centers, working on international teams, or developing schematic and design document packages for both future and existing sites. In this role you will need the ability and willingness to travel for site walks and field observations internationally and domestically with short notice.
Your day will be dynamic and impactful, involving collaborative design sessions, technical problem‑solving, and strategic planning. You will engage with cross‑functional teams, review complex engineering challenges, and develop comprehensive solutions that enhance data center performance and sustainability.
