The Amazon Optics team is looking for a Software Development Manager who will help build and manage services used by AWS and Amazon employees to secure physical sites. These services protect all Amazon locations and preserve the trust our customers have in us. You will work daily with engineers to build systems that are an essential tool for keeping Amazon sites secure around the world, directly impacting our customers.

This role requires you to hit the ground running, learn quickly, and handle overlapping tasks. High‑impact production issues often involve coordination with multiple teams, offering a breadth of impact. The ideal candidate is proactive, responsive, flexible, strategic, and thrives in a collaborative environment. You need deep computer‑science knowledge and a knack for building customer‑facing systems with creative, usable solutions.

You will have independent technical ownership of new customer features and the underlying architecture day‑to‑day. Your responsibilities include working with Optics customers and partners to solve large‑scale problems, leading a talented engineering team, and championing product excellence.

• Account for the team’s structure, software, and strategic direction.
• Partner with engineers, delegating oversight of components, processes, and operations.
• Lead with empathy, ensuring a sustainable workload and guiding the team through extra effort when needed.
• Build a self‑sufficient team while using technical judgment to improve outcomes.
• Independently own a software architecture or suite of products that have substantial business impact.
• Work backwards from the customer, defining a vision that resolves their needs.
• Proactively mitigate complex problems before they become roadblocks.
• Provide support for end‑to‑end responsibility of the team’s systems.

Identify areas where new best practices and workflows are needed and develop them.

• Prioritize and delegate work while clearing roadblocks.
• Delegate as necessary while maintaining ownership.

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience.
• 7+ years of direct engineering team experience.
• 3+ years of designing or architecting new and existing systems.
• 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi‑tier web services.
• Knowledge of engineering practices across the software/hardware/network development life cycle.
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams.

• Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements and describe product strategy.
• Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness.
