Job Description & How to Apply Below
Senior Power Generation Engineer
We are seeking an experienced electrical engineer with extensive experience in power infrastructure design, including power generation to support our growing requirements for delivering power to AWS data centers. Candidates should have proven ability to influence technical teams, a track record of delivering complex power systems from design through deployment, and a deep understanding of power generation designs.
Key Responsibilities- Develop designs and conduct analyses of various power generation sources (utility sources, diesel generators, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, battery energy storage systems, microgrids, distributed energy resources, and renewable energy) to support data center loads in grid‑connected or grid‑independent configurations.
- Support the development of power generation configurations for primary, temporary, and backup power applications.
- Understand the design and functionality of the global data center fleet, including existing, upcoming, and unique site designs.
- Interpret, evaluate, and develop Single Line Drawings (SLD), engineering drawings, equipment submittals, and equipment specifications to advance concepts and solutions.
- Provide feedback to Design Engineering teams for design revisions and to Field Engineering for operational data center upgrades.
- Understand grid interconnection standards and requirements, and work on microgrid design, controls, and distributed energy resources.
- Work on concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
- Lead within the group and within other teams, offering creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 6+ years of experience leading power infrastructure designs in complex mission‑critical facilities, plus 4+ years of design or operational support for power generation infrastructure systems.
- In‑depth knowledge of continuous operating redundant electrical systems and power infrastructure (e.g., UPS, medium‑ and low‑voltage switch gear, distribution units, variable‑frequency drives, transfer switches).
- Experience with power generation equipment and systems, including diesel generators, distributed energy resources, gas turbines, and battery energy storage systems.
- Knowledge of medium‑ and high‑voltage equipment, substation configurations, protection requirements, and on‑site power integration.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, single‑ and three‑line diagrams, P&, submittals, sequence of operations, and mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 10+ years of direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission‑critical data centers or power infrastructure.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (US‑based positions).
- Familiarity with power‑flow studies, substation design, protection coordination, utility interconnection requirements, emerging power‑generation and energy‑storage technologies, and power distribution for large‑scale mission‑critical facilities.
- System‑matter‑expert level understanding of electrical equipment and designs related to data centers and power generation equipment.
- Experience gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to identify availability and/or performance risks within critical power infrastructure, and applying data‑analysis methodologies and statistical techniques.
- Ability to produce analyses that ensure data centers meet defined design requirements, including availability goals, power‑quality specifications, and predicted performance targets.
- Experience developing solutions and executing plans on fast‑track design‑build projects or significant upgrade projects.
- Experience with commissioning and/or performance testing of critical infrastructure and associated control systems for mission‑critical environments.
- Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, R) or statistical/mathematical software (e.g., R, SAS, MATLAB).
- Excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to maintain high‑quality standards, set priorities, meet deadlines, and stay within budgets.
- Leadership and problem‑solving skills.
