Overview
The Regional Environmental Engineer plays a key role in environmental permitting and compliance for Amazon Web Services (AWS), supporting the growth of AWS data centers and infrastructure around the US and globally. The position enables AWS’s expansion by ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, developing site‑specific permitting strategies, and engaging stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities- Assess environmental risks and develop mitigations and strategies to support data center siting and development plans.
- Lead technical aspects of environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations, natural, biological and cultural resource assessments, and noise assessments.
- Deliver environmental permits, approvals, and plans to enable on‑time and compliant construction and operations of new and expanded data center sites.
- Communicate environmental requirements, risks, and activities to internal and external project partners.
- Coordinate with partner teams—Real Estate, Design, Water, Legal, Risk, Power, etc.—to optimize site designs considering natural resource and operational constraints.
- Develop site development and permitting strategies that are environmentally responsible, sustainable, and aligned with project timelines.
- Lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations to secure environmental permits.
- Develop, manage and track metrics to evaluate project success.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent.
- Experience delivering multi‑media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance projects with specific expertise in CWA 404 and NPDES permitting, groundwater protection, wastewater discharge, and natural and cultural resource evaluations.
- 7+ years of experience conducting environmental due diligence for greenfield and brownfield sites.
- At least 3 years of project or task management experience for environmental permitting and/or due diligence projects.
- 5+ years of experience working in data centers or critical infrastructure.
- Experience managing large projects and multifunctional teams.
- Travel up to 25% of the time.
- Experience in multiple US states, preferably in NC, GA, LA, MS, TX, TN, OK, FL.
- Experience managing and/or supporting community/public interactions.
- Experience with Smartsheet or other project‑management software.

Salary in the USA (VA, Herndon) is $139,300 – $208,000 annually; in WA, Seattle the same range.
