Critical Infrastructure Water Engineer, Field Engineering

Job :  | Amazon Data Services, Inc.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide full life-cycle support to AWS Data Centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance; influence all aspects of water-based cooling systems infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to assess and update existing water infrastructure systems while developing new solutions, evaluating current system performance, identifying retrofit opportunities, and implementing improvements.
  • Act as the go-to engineering resource for your region when technical advice is needed.
  • Troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures.
  • Support operational issues with ad‑hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, including critical equipment, and event support.
  • Own conceptual design for existing data center upgrades and design solutions that add capacity, improve availability, increase efficiency and sustainability.
  • Interface with internal teams (operations, design engineering, server hardware, environment and health & safety) to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability.
  • Develop innovative solutions for AWS’s data centers and work on concurrent projects, sometimes across multiple geographical regions.
  • Initiate and lead engineering audits including on-site visits, produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
  • Act as resident engineer during new construction projects, supporting construction, commissioning, and turnover.
Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Mechanical/Chemical/Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Planning or equivalent.
  • 5+ cumulative years of experience in water engineering, water resource management, or industrial water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Experience analyzing water chemistry, conventional/membrane water treatment technologies for industrial applications, and application of environmental regulations and industry standards for water quality management.
  • Understanding of physical, chemical, and biological practices for treating industrial and reclaimed water, including hydraulics, pump selection and sizing, and process equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a data center or mission‑critical facility, or experience in construction.
  • Experience as resident engineer or hands‑on (in the field) design consultant or owner’s engineer.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittal documents, and applicable building codes.
  • Ability to carry design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment/mass production.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment/design related to data centers (e.g., uninterruptable power sources, diesel generators, electrical switch gear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, automatic/static transfer switches, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAH, fans, air…
