The incumbent serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) at the Western Branch (CBOC) under the Hampton VA Healthcare System with the department of Diagnostic Imaging.

Key Responsibilities

VA Careers - Medical Support Assistant:  Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The incumbent serves as a Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) in Radiology/Nuclear Medicine Service. The AMSA works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model within the Radiology/Nuclear Medicine Service Line.

The incumbent will interface with numerous computer applications including but not limited to CPRS, VistA, My Healthe Vet , VetLInk, VSE, etc. Manage, plan, and set priorities and deadlines for meeting timeliness of scheduling imaging studies. Coordinates with the patient, interdisciplinary team including the radiologist, technologists, and patients' referring service team, nurses, other VA medical centers, and other agencies.

Notify patients of requirements prior to appointment including labs or x-rays; follow up care on imaging orders). Monitors pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient appointment/procedure including X-rays, Lab work, MRI safety screening requirements, etc.

Data reports are run from the VistA Radiology Package or Fileman and are used to manage radiology scheduling lists; this includes, pending, hold, and past scheduled exams validating accuracy, resolving issues and disposition of orders as required in accordance with policy. Coordinates patient procedures by verifying pre-procedure workup is complete and meets procedure requirements prior to procedure.

This may include evaluating patient information, such as lab results and pre-procedure clinical screening for MRI and/or positron emission imaging (PET) exams to assure readiness for imaging exam/procedure and resolving issues, if needed. Interprets information provided to ensure that the correct exam as ordered by the physician is the one scheduled to be done.

Works collaboratively with the Office of Community Care for scheduling of radiologic/nuclear medicine procedures performed in the community. Supports patient safety standards using the correct Veterans Affairs identification of all patients using two forms of identification, name and Social Security Number or DOB. Treats Veterans with dignity, courtesy, and respect in keeping with the principles and practices of Veteran-Centered Care.

Communicates with all internal and external customers in a courteous, positive, open, honest, cooperative manner, and treats all with dignity and respect. Responds to all inquiries in person, by e-mail, and telephone in a timely and courteous manner and as quickly as the situation dictates.

Resolves all issues and carries them through to completion in a timely manner appropriate to the situation; directs inquires to appropriate personnel or department when unable to personally address the issue. Informs supervisor or appropriate management official of any issue or potential incident where a customer may be dissatisfied or angry as a result of information provided.
