About the role
AWS Core Networking's Network Development Engineer builds, deploys, and scales the Amazon networks that support AWS, customers, and other business units across multiple global datacenters. You work with software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers to deliver high‑quality, sustainable networking solutions at scale.
Key Responsibilities- Create and implement changes on the network.
- Work closely with automation teams to define tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.
- Lead network projects in areas such as sustaining engineering, deployment/implementation, scaling, technology refresh, best‑practice application, and optimization.
- Sustain next‑generation Amazon networks for significant AWS customers by providing critical support to diagnose, mitigate impact, and resolve large‑scale networking events.
- Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configuration issues; including low‑level application interaction, Unix systems, and modern networking software tools.
- Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border and everything in between.
- Partner with the broader Network/Infrastructure organization on engineering, configuration standards, and tools.
- Work closely with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure smooth roll‑out of new designs, products, and networking software tools.
- Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure compliance with those standards and policies.
- Deliver simple, sustainable, and repeatable solutions and processes.
- Collaborate with highest‑tier escalation engineers and resolvers.
- Create and review documentation and processes regarding network implementation, recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, and knowledge transfer material.
- Work in a 24x7 on‑call rotation, with the ability to drive into the workplace for critical events or needs.
- Manage customers during problem resolution and operate efficiently under pressure.
- Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining alertness and attention to detail.
- Travel to data center, network sites, and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
- 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience.
- 4+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment.
- 1+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell, and/or Perl.
- Experience with systems administration, programming or networking.
- Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, server load balancing, and network security architecture and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS‑IS, BGP, MPLS, firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS, etc.
