The purpose of this position is to operate medium to heavy automotive and construction equipment to perform town water and sewer (sanitary and storm) lines repair and maintenance. Employees in this classification are responsible for operating any or all of the following items; flush trucks, CCTV inspection equipment, dump trucks, rubber-tire loaders, front-end loaders, backhoes, bobcats, forklifts, flush trucks and trailers, bush hogs, snow removal equipment and other maintenance equipment as needed.

This position support supervisors as needed and oversee O&M (Operation and Maintenance) projects.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate a variety of varied purpose equipment in sewer (sanitary and storm) and water line repair and maintenance.
  • Services and makes minor repairs to equipment; transports equipment.
  • Operates flush truck, performing routine and emergency maintenance to ensure the unrestricted conveyance of sewer system.
  • Investigates customer complaints.
  • Assists with inspecting mechanical or lining of sewer repairs.
  • Conducts and records I&I inspections of the sewer system.
  • Assist with maintaining lift stations.
  • Maintains access to trunk lines and meter stations; calibrates meters. Pulls water meters for testing.
  • Checks and services flapper valves; checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements; performs smoke testing; assists other crews with confined space testing.
  • Repairs manholes; monitors manholes for backups.
  • Responds to water and sewer emergencies related to water breaks, sewer backups and sewer repair.
  • Installs water meters, ground meters, fire hydrants, drinking fountains and new water lines.
  • Repairs main water line breaks; repairs and maintains fire hydrants and well buildings; backfills around ground meters.
  • Assists with inspections of system below ground and above ground that will require confined space entry per permit requirements or climbing tanks using appropriate fall protection apparatus.
  • Performs fire flow tests.
  • Turns water on and off.
  • Checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements. Sets up work zone safely according to standards. Flags traffic during road and right-of-way maintenance.
  • Serves as lead worker on job sites; gives instructions and coordinates activities. Could perform duties of crew supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Assist with marking miss utility tickets (water and sewer).
  • Sets up and breaks down for special events; works at special events as required, including Herndon Festival.
  • Participates in snow and ice removal.
  • Assists other crews as needed. Performs other duties as required.
  • Position is considered “essential personnel” defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

    Requirements
    • High school diploma or GED
    • One to two years’ experience and/or training in sewer (sanitary or storm) or water system maintenance preferred
    • Valid Commercial driver’s license, Class B with air brakes and tanker endorsement within six months of employment
    • Must be able to complete competent person training for trench safety and confined space entry within six months of employment
    • Must be able to obtain both flagger certification and forklift operator license issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation within six months of employment with the town.

    Hours: 6:30am - 3:00pm
