Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of Amazon’s fastest growing businesses, and the Storage Service (S3) is a core, highly‑distributed storage platform. The S3 Unique Regions group is responsible for operating S3 in private regions for U.S. government customers, ensuring compliance with strict security requirements while delivering the same world‑class experience as the public service. This role is a Systems Development Engineer who will lead a small engineering team, design and deliver automation solutions, and help define how software and its operators interact to deliver a resilient, customer‑obsessed service.
Key Responsibilities- Act as a technical lead for a small engineering team through the full software lifecycle.
- Identify, plan, deliver, and operate software and processes that generate business‑impacting improvements for AWS operations.
- Work closely with AWS engineers to identify process automation opportunities.
- Perform full‑lifecycle software development with constant customer interaction: scope, design, implement, test, deliver, and operate solutions.
- Participate in an on‑call rotation supporting automation solutions and, eventually, on‑call for the entire S3 service in unique regions.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to understand automation opportunities.
- Apply Dev Ops, Agile Scrum, and incremental delivery practices.
- Engage with support teams and users to refine solutions.
- Peer‑review code and share subject‑matter expertise.
- Progress from supporting automation tools to on‑call for the S3 service itself.
The team builds meaningful solutions, works side‑by‑side with customers, and values diversity and inclusion. Team members share victories, collaborate openly, and grow together professionally and personally.
Basic Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of professional software development, with at least one modern language (C++, C#, Java, Python, Go, Power Shell, or Ruby).
- 4+ years of experience in Linux/Unix environments.
- 2+ years of designing or architecting systems, focusing on reliability, scalability, and design patterns.
- Current, active U.S. Government Security Clearance of TS/SCI with Polygraph.
- 1+ year of experience in development/programming/scripting languages such as Python, Java, Bash, or Perl.
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns across the full software/hardware/network lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations.
- Experience leading the delivery of complex software or computing infrastructure to customers.
The base salary range for this position is USD – annually (location based). Your package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
