Special Education Teacher
Under the direction of the school principal, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop critical thinking, problem‑solving, and lifelong learning skills in accordance with each student’s ability. The teacher maintains safety, establishes rapport with students, parents, and colleagues, and differentiates curriculum using research‑based methods. Proficiency‑Based Grading is implemented in student evaluations.
Responsibilities- Teach core content areas outlined in the USBE’s Core Curriculum and other approved learning activities.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, and provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to student needs.
- Translate lesson plans into effective classroom practice, maximizing instructional time.
- Utilize computers and other technological support equipment.
- Supervise students indoors and outdoors, including recess, gymnasium activities, and all weather conditions.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior; implement discipline strategies.
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, maintain records, and prepare progress reports.
- Implement Proficiency‑Based Learning and the Granite Way in student evaluations.
- Communicate with parents through conferences, calls, e‑mails, planners, and the school website.
- Cooperate with other professional staff regarding student growth.
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment on the campus.
- Participate in faculty meetings, evaluation procedures, and committees as required.
- Administer student attendance policies and procedures.
- Model professional and ethical standards and adhere to district policies.
- Provide hygiene and medical care for students with complex needs.
- Support student activities and select instructional materials, maintaining inventory records.

- Must hold a Utah Special Education teaching license, an out‑of‑state Special Education license, or a conferral letter from a university for new graduates.
- Must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and either a valid Associate License from the Utah State Board of Education or acceptance into an approved in‑state Special Education program.
- Mild/Moderate/Severe endorsement required.
- Will be hired for the 2026–2027 school year.
- Preference for teachers with demonstrated collaboration skills and experience supporting special education students.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong computer and educational technology skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Self‑motivated and responsible.
- Effective classroom management and multi‑tasking abilities.
- First Utah teaching license issued in 2024 or later.
- Utah Reading Endorsement granted in 2022 or later.
- Successful completion of the UFOR Assessment.
- Documentation of completion of the Keys to Early Reading training.
- Certificates of completion for LETRS Units 1–8.
- Willing to begin required training during the first year and complete it per district and state requirements.
- USBE‑approved cleared criminal background check.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Professional Educator License for the State of Utah in the relevant licensure area and endorsement.
- Prepared to supervise students indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to perform tasks that may involve extended keyboard or workstation use.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 25–50 pounds as required.
- Requiring use of hands, vision (including color and depth perception), and hearing.
- Teachers in Special Education, P.E., CTE, Theatre, or Art may need to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Regular speaking and hearing, and occasional climbing or balancing activities.
