OverviewWe are seeking an energetic and detail-oriented Spray Dryer Shift Supervisor to lead our production team in the spray drying process. This pivotal role involves overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the spray drying production line during an assigned shift. This role leads a team of operators, ensures product quality and yield targets are met, manages equipment performance, and enforces food/product safety, sanitation, and workplace safety standards.
DutiesProduction & Process Oversight
- Supervise the shift-to-shift operation of the spray dryer and associated equipment (evaporators, atomizers, cyclones, baghouses, powder handling/packaging systems)
- Monitor process parameters (inlet/outlet temperatures, feed rate, atomization pressure, moisture content) and adjust operations to meet quality and throughput targets
- Troubleshoot process deviations and equipment malfunctions, escalating to maintenance or engineering as needed
- Ensure changeovers, startups, and shutdowns are executed per standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Assign tasks and manage staffing levels across the shift, including breaks and coverage
- Train, coach, and evaluate operators on equipment operation, safety protocols, and quality standards
- Conduct pre-shift meetings to communicate priorities, safety topics, and carryover issues from the previous shift
- Address performance or conduct issues in line with company policy
- Ensure compliance with GMPs, HACCP, SQF/BRC (or applicable food/pharma safety systems), and batch documentation requirements
- Perform or verify in-process quality checks (moisture, bulk density, particle size, microbiological sampling) and respond to out-of-spec results
- Maintain accurate production, downtime, and quality records
- Support root cause investigations for quality holds or deviations
- Enforce all safety policies and PPE requirements
- Conduct safety audits and near-miss/incident reporting
- Ensure sanitation schedules (CIP/COP) are followed and documented
- Complete shift handoff reports, production logs, and downtime tracking
- Monitor and report on shift KPIs (yield, uptime, waste, labor efficiency)
- Order supplies or flag maintenance needs to keep the line running
High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate's degree or technical certification in process technology, food science, or related field preferred
3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, with direct spray drying or thermal processing experience strongly preferred
Physical RequirementsAble to stand, walk, climb stairs/ladders, and work at heights for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Tolerance for working in hot, humid, dusty, and noisy industrial environments. Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed.
