Position Summary

Protects the organization’s employees, patients, visitors, properties, and all items of value on premises from any preventable harm or danger. Maintains general order of the local environment and intervenes in disturbances in a calm and efficient manner guided by courtesy, established rules and regulations. Detects, corrects, reports, investigates, manages, and mitigates safety and security hazards and violations on hospital campuses and off‑site properties using appropriate tools, training, and resources.

Assists in Incident Command situations, psychiatric patient evaluations and management, duress alarms, conflict situations, and hazardous materials/waste spills. Responds and assists with all medical emergencies within the officer’s training scope.

Licenses and Certification
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license
  • LevelI (within 90 days):
    Essentials of Aggression Management (EOAM), Taser, FEMAIS‑906 Basic Workplace Security Awareness, FEMAIS‑907 Active Shooter, handcuff training, SIH Security New Hire Orientation Checklist completion.
  • LevelII (minimum 90 days): NIMSIS‑100a & IS‑200a, completion of Competency Assessment for promotion from LevelI toII, Basic certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety.
  • LevelIII (minimum 180 days): NIMSIS‑700b & IS‑800b, Advanced certification by International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety.
Physical Activities
  • Intermittent hand manipulation and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Assist or restrain and lift a person; modifications possible.
  • Requires sufficient strength and agility to respond to crisis situations and critical confrontations.
Experience and Skills
  • Basic computer skills; able to read, write and submit detailed reports.
  • Respond calmly and operate efficiently in emergency and critical confrontations.
  • Professional and courteous when dealing with staff and public of all age groups.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Experience with the public in a service environment; security experience preferred.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Licenses and certifications listed above.
Responsibilities
Level1 Responsibilities
  • Serve as physical deterrent and visible presence to maintain safety and security.
  • Detect, correct, report, investigate, manage, and mitigate safety and security hazards and violations on hospital campuses and off‑site properties.
  • Respond quickly to highly stressful critical and emergency situations.
  • Assist in Incident Command situations, psychiatric patient evaluations and management, duress alarms, conflict situations, and hazardous materials/waste spills.
  • Utilize reasonable non‑deadly force at the minimal amount necessary to maintain control in accordance with SIH policy and Illinois State Law.
  • Prioritize calls for service based on safety urgency.
  • Confront, assess, and detain unauthorized persons as identified.
  • Patrol buildings and property on foot or by vehicle to deter criminal activity.
  • Use security monitoring and video surveillance systems to detect and respond to security events.
  • Control parking and traffic flow; enforce parking regulations.
  • Maintain access routes and accessibility to the Emergency Department and other entrances/exits for patients, visitors, and EMS.
  • Escort personnel to parking lots and hospital buildings as requested.
  • Assist visitors and patients with way finding and issue resolution.
  • Provide correctional officers/police officers with forensic education as applicable.
  • Enforce visitor pass procedures.
  • Monitor radio communications by Switchboard Operator and other officers to provide assistance as needed.
  • Secure and/or unlock offices and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports and other documentation using security management software.
  • Provide secure courier assistance as required.
  • Assist with helicopter transfers and other patient movements as required.
  • Operate and maintain onsite patient transport shuttle as assigned.
  • Complete and pass focused training such as aggression management, hazardous materials/waste, access controls, and decontamination.
