Program Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Hospital Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center is a structured post-graduate training program for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs). The fellowship combines hands‑on clinical experience, specialty rotations, and didactic education to prepare APPs for independent practice in hospital medicine.

Program Structure

The fellowship is divided into three core phases:

  • Foundational Training - APPs receive structured onboarding, including clinical skills development, hospital workflows, EMR training, and supervised patient care.
  • Core Clinical Rotations - Fellows gain in‑depth experience in general inpatient medicine and specialty areas such as:
  • Cardiology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Nephrology
  • Palliative Care
  • Community Hospitalist
  • Hospitalist Cross‑Coverage (Nights)
Schedule & Work Hours
  • Primarily Monday
    - Friday
  • Night Rotations Required for cross‑coverage experience (Monday
    - Thursday, 7 PM - 7 AM)

  • A personal narrative describing your professional goals and interest in Advanced Practice Hospitalist Medicine Fellowship (Double‑spaced, 12 font, max 3 pages).
  • A resume/CV, including a description of adult inpatient experience, including clinical rotations, if any.
  • Three letters of recommendation, one from a current program director or clinical faculty. If more than two years since graduation, one from a recent supervising physician or APP colleague.
