Under direction of a Registered Nurse, the Patient Care Technician contributes to basic patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patient. The technician also performs monitor technician duties, including continuous observation of patient heartbeat patterns, noting irregularities in telemetry rhythms, ensuring monitors function correctly, and reporting concerns to the RN in charge or charge nurse.
The technician must have troubleshooting skills to recognize monitoring problems, identify possible causes, and seek solutions. Actual tasks may vary depending on the unit or department assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalency required.
- BLS required prior to orientation completion. Must be obtained through Penn State Health or American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Six months of ED or monitor tech experience, heart arrhythmia course completion, or current nursing student.
