Faculty Clinical Medical Physicist Radiation Oncology

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Penn State Health is seeking a Faculty Clinical Therapeutic Medical Physicist to join our dynamic and expanding team. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to become part of an academically driven department that is growing rapidly and actively integrating state-of-the-art technologies to elevate clinical care, education, and research.

The therapeutic medical physics division includes nine faculty and staff physicists who provide comprehensive clinical services across three Penn State Health locations. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative and supportive team with broad expertise across all areas of radiation oncology physics.

The department is deeply committed to academic scholarship, innovation, participation in national cooperative groups, and the professional development of its faculty. Penn State Health maintains an active presence in NRG Oncology and encourages physics faculty involvement in protocol development, clinical trial implementation, and national working groups. Faculty are also supported in participating in AAPM committees, task groups, and educational activities, aligning with our strong culture of professional engagement.

This position will primarily support clinical radiation therapy physics services at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing clinical physics support for external beam radiation therapy, including IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, SBRT, and SRS
  • Supporting brachytherapy programs, including LDR and HDR
  • Performing routine and advanced quality assurance, contributing to treatment planning, and leading or participating in commissioning and clinical implementation of new technologies
  • Engaging in scholarly activities, including research, clinical innovation, participation in NRG and AAPM initiatives, and contributing to institutional teaching missions

Academic rank for this non-tenure-track appointment will be commensurate with education, experience, and scholarly achievements.

The Hershey campus maintains a continually advancing clinical environment that supports both high-quality patient care and academic inquiry. Current technologies include:

  • MIM software suite
  • Radformation software suite
  • Elekta Gamma Knife Esprit
  • A Varian ETHOS adaptive therapy platform is scheduled for installation in early spring, creating additional opportunities for clinical and research innovation in adaptive radiotherapy.

Beyond the clinical technology infrastructure, faculty benefit from access to a recently installed SARRP (Small Animal Radiation Research Platform) and the expansive research resources and collaborative opportunities available across Penn State University.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Medical Physics, Physics, Engineering or related basic science
  • At least two years of clinical experience in radiation oncology physics
  • Eligible for A /ABMP certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

A /ABMP certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics, experience with Varian software and equipment, experience with Elekta Gamma Knife, experience with MIM Maestro would be an asset, but are not required.
