SUMMARY OF POSITION

Join the pediatric hematology team at Penn State Health and provide compassionate, evidence-based care to children and adolescents with benign hematologic disorders. We are seeking a collaborative and patient-centered Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to support outpatient, inpatient, and infusion-based pediatric hematology services.

The Pediatric Hematology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers comprehensive care to pediatric patients with benign hematologic disorders in collaboration with pediatric hematology physicians and a multidisciplinary care team. Responsibilities include clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, patient and family education, and coordination of care across the continuum.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic academic environment focused on delivering exceptional patient care while supporting quality improvement, education, and clinical research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform comprehensive and focused histories and physical examinations for pediatric hematology patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing including laboratory studies and imaging.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with the pediatric hematology team.
  • Manage acute and chronic hematologic conditions including:
    • Anemia
    • Thrombocytopenia
    • Sickle cell disease
    • Myelodysplastic syndromes
    • Heavy menstrual bleeding
    • G6PD deficiency
    • Hemoglobinopathy traits and other benign blood disorders
  • Prescribe medications, supportive therapies, and blood products in accordance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor treatment response and potential toxicities; adjust therapies as appropriate.
  • Participate in inpatient consultations, outpatient follow-up visits, and infusion center management as assigned.
  • Coordinate care with nursing, pharmacy, transfusion medicine, and other pediatric subspecialties.

Education & Support

  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and self-management strategies.
  • Provide education and support to nursing staff, trainees, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Support clinical research initiatives through patient identification, data collection, and protocol adherence when applicable.

Quality & Professional Development

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and clinical audits.
  • Maintain professional certification and continuing education requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, care pathways, and evidence-based best practices.

  • Primarily weekday schedule with possible weekend or on-call responsibilities based on departmental needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Masters Degree in Nursing with clinical specialization required.
  • Two (2) years' work experience as a RN required.
  • Current licensed to practice as a CRNP by Pennsylvania Board of Nurse Examiners required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in hematology, oncology, pediatrics, internal medicine, or a related specialty preferred.
  • New graduates with strong hematology/oncology clinical training are encouraged to apply.
