Clinical Veterinarian - Comparative Medicine
Position SummaryThis position is primarily clinical, providing veterinary care and services in support of the organization’s research mission. The incumbent will diagnose, treat, and manage clinical cases identified in research colonies; assist with disease surveillance and prevention; participate in compliance activities; and aid the Director with administration of the animal care and use program. The candidate will provide anesthesia, surgery, and oversee post‑operative care for research animals, and will have opportunities to teach residents, graduate students, and medical students, and collaborate on research activities.
This is a non‑tenure line faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level.
- Provide daily veterinary care for the resource program with a census of approximately 15,000 animals in barrier, non‑barrier, and large‑animal areas.
- Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule to provide after‑hours and weekend coverage.
- Develop and carry out a preventive medical program for species in the assigned area of responsibility.
- Oversee anesthesia, surgery, and pre‑ and post‑procedural care of research animals.
- Assist with post‑approval monitoring.
- Consult with principal investigators regarding study design, surgical planning, and animal‑related questions.
- Review animal care and use protocols before submission for IACUC review.
- Assist with IACUC activities, including semi‑annual program reviews and inspections of facilities and use areas.
- Participate in training of animal care staff, veterinary support staff, residents, and research staff.
- DVM, VMD, or equivalent from an AVMA‑accredited or recognized veterinary school.
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state.
- Experience working with swine, calves, sheep, rabbits, and rodents in a research setting.
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in animal‑based research.
- Experience collaborating with principal investigators, research staff, animal care staff, and students.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service‑oriented, rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work independently and across organizational lines.
- Ability to supervise staff.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Project management skills or experience.
- USDA accredited veterinarian.
- Advanced training in laboratory animal medicine; veterinary anesthesiology, surgery, or emergency medicine; or other relevant specialty.
This is a limited‑term non‑tenure line position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of renewal.
